Hi all. I wasn't too sure about the value of any of these notes when bidding. Feeling adventurous, I guess. Anyone caring to provide some input on value and/or identification would be greatly appreciated. To start, here are a couple of Japanese notes. I don't know much more about them.
Here are a pretty nice 1880's 50 centavo note from Puerto Plata, and a 1 piastre note from French Indo-China. Anyone else know more about them than that?
Here are a couple of Japanese occupational notes from the Netherlands. They are in Dutch, and please note the ink smear on the face of the Gulden note.
Here is a Philippine Emergency War Circulating note. I'm trying to make out the serial number that was handwritten in red ink. This is the most intriguing to me out of the group, and though I found one very similar here: http://guerrilla-money.com/g-m/Samar/Guiuan/index.php It isn't an exact match. I think that is because some were printed in the Philippines by the govt in exile, and some were printed in Australia. Help Please!
I just sold about 30 of these notes about 3 months ago. I was selling off some of my uncles coins and notes he had collected over the years. These are from Japan WWll era. I got like $25.00 for the lot that was mixed some in serial number order. He had obtained these note from prisoners he had captured. Some of the notes were just like yours others were different. Not alot of value but very cool notes. I'll see if I still have images on my files and post them.
I must of deleted the notes from Japan but here are a couple of WWll Phillipines note he had that I also sold for him.
Thanks Paddy. Any idea as to these War Emergency Notes? The link seems to be all I can find on them, short of forking over $75 for the book. I only own the one, so that would be a bad buy for me. Anyone own a copy of "A GUIDE BOOK ON PHILIPPINES PAPER MONEY" BY NEIL SHAFER or "Philippine emergency and guerrilla currency of World War II" by the same author?
I have both books but neither will be much help with pricing. The Guide Book does not have any significant coverage for Philippine emergency notes and this note is not listed there. It is listed in the Philippine Guerrilla book but that book is almost 40 years old and its pricing is out of date. What you have is one of the three types of 2 peso notes that were released as the Fourth Military Issue for the Municipality of Guiuan in Samar province from July 1943. One design is similar to this one except that the large 2 at right is not filled in. The other design looks nothing like this. It is listed as SMR-426. Shafer priced this one at $8.00 in Fine in 1974. Guiuan and Samar had one of the larger number of issues of emergency notes. These notes were not recognized for redemption after the war by the government of the Philippines. All of the Guiuan notes were printed in the Philippines.
Since you asked about pricing . . . . . . most of these notes are $3.00-5.00. The two exceptions are the 50 centavo note and the Philippine emergency note. I would put each of those at about $10.00. There is no premium associated with the ink smear on the Dutch East Indies one gulden note. This is fairly common on JIM. The French Indo-China note has an interesting history. The B series of this note was printed by ABNC in 1941 and en route to French Indo-China when the war began. The ship was anchored in Manila Bay when the Japanese attacked. The notes were looted from the vessel.
Neat that they were printed on tax forms, huh? Kinda fitting topic, considering it's 4-15 in about ten minutes.
Your first Japanese note is No. 11-53 in the Japanese Numismatic Dealers Assn. catalog, described as "Third Sugahara", indicating that it is the third Bank of Japan 5 yen note depicting Ninth Century court scholar, poet, and political figure Sugawara no Michizane 菅原道真. It was issued on December 15, 1943, and circulated until March 2, 1946, according to the JNDA. Another source gives its issue date as January 6, 1942. Although the JNDA valuation in the condition shown is in the $300 range, one in fairly similar condition sold on EBay last month for $12. The next one is a 10 yen Bank of Japan "Third Wake" (Wa-kay), the third monetary depiction of Wake no Kiyomaro 和気清麻呂, an Eighth Century politician and Buddhist religious leader. It circulated from November 20, 1944 to March 2, 1946, In the condition shown it has a JNDA valuation of about $5. I haven't found any on-line records for recent sales of this note. Germany, not Japan, invaded the Netherlands during WW II. Your invasion notes are from the occupied colony known as the Dutch East Indies (basically today's Indonesia). Both have the legend "Japanese Government Pay to Bearer". The JNDA Nos. are 13-59 for the one guilden and 13-60 for the half, in the category "Notes of the Pacific War". Both were issued in 1942.
