Hi, My family have two half sovereigns that they were looking to sell. On doing a search on them I've read in a couple of places that there weren't any 1917 half sovereigns minted. Is this true, and would this mean they could be fakes? They have been in the family for quite some time. Any information would be helpful. I'm guessing we'd need to have them checked out, but I thought I'd try on here first.
There were definitely 1917 half sovereigns minted but I think they were only minted in Sydney, AU. Show some pics and we'll tell you if they're fakes.
According to Chard Tax-free Gold, there were no 1917 half sovereigns minted at London or any of the branch mints. http://www.taxfreegold.co.uk/halfsovereignsgeorgevforsale.html
Think I've solved the mystery, turns out they are sovereigns and not half sovereigns, spent the last 40 years not knowing this, apologies for the wild goose chase
I'm in the UK so cant compare it to a nickel, its approximately 22mm in diameter, weighs just a shade under 8g and is around 2mm thick. They appear to be Sydney minted ones as I've been able to zoom in on them after taking the photos.
