I was going through silver bullion at the local B&M and came across a 1929d Mercury dime that appears to have the mintmark from 1917 and before. This was addressed in Mr. Lange's Mercury Dime guide, but he appears to hedge his bet as to veracity. I am attaching picture showing three reverses. The one at the top is a 1917 coin (I don'y have a '16D) for camparison. The left lower coin is the potential small mintmark '29, and the lower left is a '29 from my circulated set. Does anyone think that the new '29 looks more like the '17 than it does like the old '29? I realize the condition makes such comparisons difficult, but if anyone has an opinion, I would love to hear it. Have fun
Having two lefts but no rights does tend to complicate things. So here is another try. The upper coin is a '17. Both of the lower coins are '29's - the one on the left is the possible old mint mark, the one the right is what I consider the typical mintmark. Sorry (I'd put one of those red faces in if I knew how).
Until an Expert confirm size of D could be on that one used for The 1917 on the 1929 its speculations I would think. It took about 10yrs to find a LG S and a small s for The 1928-S Mercury dime.
