1972 DDO Cent

Found this roll searching today and I may have peed myself a bit lol. I checked on lincolncentresource.com and I'm pretty sure it is the 1972 DDO 1. Sorry the scans are bad but you can make out the doubling pretty well. It's easy to see without a loupe too. Any ideas as to grade/value/authenticity? As it was pulled from circulation I don't see why it would be counterfeit but the website said they exist. Thanks for any input!!

if that's a small gouge above the D? in UNITED, then I'd say it's the DDO #1 (the major one), but I'd wait for some experts to weigh in...

 

Looks like it to me, dang that's a good find!

 

My wife says it looks exactly like DDO 1... She's an expert too lol...Not really, but she looked through all of the DDO's and settled on that one. Wish I had a decent microscope or camera to get close ups.

 

No mistaking it. That's the big one. Fantastic find!
In the grade it's in, I can see it selling for $200+ on ebay, if you get it slabbed (which I would recommend).

Looks 62/63BN. Probably a $250 coin as it sits.

The one thing I'm curious about is the die gouge on the reverse. It says over the "D" on the reverse on lincolncentresource.com and I can't find it.

So another question...non cents, you say I should get it slabbed. What would you recommend? I'm not a member of any grading service. Would it be worth the fees to get it sent in? There is the Whitman coin show in Baltimore in June. Should I take it there and have it graded? Do they charge the same as if I mailed it in? I'm not planning on selling it anytime soon.

 

I am not seeing what I would be comfortable calling an MS example, and it would be nice to see a larger version of your second obverse image, but fantastic find nonetheless. Congrats.

 

Books - I tried making the second image larger and it just got super pixelated. For all the up-to-date modern technology I have, I can't get a decent coin picture to save my life! Arg.

 

PCGS slabs cherrypicker varieties, but their prices can really add up with the variety label and all that. I would recommend ANACS for variety attributions, but I am not an expert on slabbing so I will also wait for the experts. I don't know the details on pricing, but if you plan on selling such a well-known and popular variety, people are looking for a certified example.

 

Since I started CRH'ing I said I wouldn't slab my finds. Of course so far I've only found 2 1995 DDO's, 3 1998 WAMs, and 11 2000 WAMS lol. I'm not planning on selling anytime soon. I'd like to pass all my stuff on to my son someday (he's only two). Perhaps if/when I need to sell I will get it slabbed. Can't see the point of paying a bunch of money to have someone tell me what I already know and then stick it back in the box...

Best part of this whole thing is, as I was looking at the first 72's in the pile from the box I was telling myself that they weren't worth my time and these were the last ones I was going to check. I guess I'll keep checking them!

 

PCGS costs would be $16 as it is a modern coin, plus 24 for variety attribution, and there is a $8 handling fee for the order , and 18.95 return postage for 1-4 coins, plus your postage ( registered probably) to PCGS. NGC charges a little less for attribution, but will attribute that variety also. Thats a good hunk out of value if you plan to sell it.

 

If you don't plan on selling it, at least put it in a little cardboard holder to give it a little protection from scratches, etc. Once again, congrats on the find. That's really a once in a lifetime find.

 

It's going in a 2x2 flip when after my son goes to bed tonight. I'm hoping it isn't a once in a lifetime find!
