Which Gold Coin Should I get?

Right, I have been saying for months I'd get my first gold coin with my first ever paycheque from my first ever job.
Well I recived my first paycheque the other week, and I probably would have gotten me half an ounce.

I next get paid in mid december; and It'll be much more, so it will be my christmas present aswell.

I have gotten many an idea from this site of coins to buy...but as the coin will cost so much, and be prob my only gold coin for some time to come, I wan't it to be perfect.

My Budget = £400/$760, I certainly don't intend to hit the very top of my budget aswell.

Things I take into account...Looks, and History and value for money.

    Some I have singled out...

    1987 Proof Double Gold Sovereign (15.98g)(£195, $370)
    1987 Gold Eagle (1oz)(£385, $730)
    1899 Double Eagle (0.97oz) (£390, $740)
    1995 Gold Proof £2 Dove of Peace (15.98g) (£195, $370)
    1996 Euro 1996 Football Gold Proof £2 (15.98g) (£229, $434)

The 1987s picked on their date and looks, the double eagle on its history, and the £2 coins on their value for money and looks.
Cost aside, which one would you pick out of my list?

    Any ideas?

And maybe places to buy for the UK Buyer, I found all the coins listed above on the same website that I have bought from many times before, and with the £2 coins he seems to have them $190 cheaper than anywhere else.

What is that in real money?
    Just kidding.
Any of the pieces that you have listed would seem to be good choices.
Better yet, go for something older, like Victorian, you can get some great coins at a modest premium over melt.

I personally would pick the Double Eagle, but I'm a U.S. resident, so I'm probably a little partial to that over the non-U.S. coins. Also, like you said, it's neat that it's an older coin and has a lot of history behind it. To narrow it down, I'd say to make two decisions first that will help you. First, do you want a U.K. coin or a non-U.K. coin? Secondly, do you want an older coin or a modern coin? If you make those two decisions, you'll be well on your way to narrowing down your list.

I'd get a british sovereign. I love the reverse on them. Not sure how much they cost though.

Your budget effectively excludes most of the gold on my modern Japanese "Maybe someday" list. :(

But you might want to consider a pre-Meiji Nibu Kin[IMG]

or even a Manen Koban. [IMG]

You had me at 1899 Double Eagle. But, you should get what you want.

Personally, the modern coins out there are just wacky. There are soooo many of them and they are all crazy different. I bet I'm one of the only people who was initially upset at the state quarter program. (still am a little bit.) I refuse to buy into this "first lady coin" bogusness. What's next? Vice Presidents and their wives? A NASCAR coin?

I better stop, I'm getting worked up. :p Goosefrabba... goosefrabba...

I like all of the £2 mentioned.

I've always wanted a gold indian head, but I wouldn't know where to look.

If Its old, it has the feeling of being 'treasure' or something...I know that sounds saaad.

If you are interested in gold coins might i suggest picking up some of the "world" gold that is sold for just around spot, I have a pretty solid collection of gold coins form austria, france, etc. some really nice designs and you can get them for next to nothing... (over spot that is)

the only thing better than a gold coin is a BUNCH of gold coins ;)

the best thing anyone ever told me when i was asking advice about "which coin should i buy?" is buy what you like! - i am not sure, but i think you may have said this a few times GDJMSP...

Afraid not Speedy, my collecting days are over, at least for coins. I will continue to study numismatics in every way I can, probably until I die. I've discovered that I enjoy the study and trying to help others even more than I do the coins. So my focus will be on books and research from here on out, trying to learn as much as I can. Still a long way to go.

I'd like a decent sized coin...like the 1/10oz coins are like 16mm in diameter...which is like just more than a 5 UK Pence coin.

Krugerrands, I remember when I found a site selling them for £220, untill I rang them up to double check the price, and they were £400. They;'re also mentioned on Die Hard with a Vengence, so thats a plus ;)
I'd want a proof one though.

Also when I said in my first post, 'I don't intend to hit the max of the budget' I meant...I don't HAVE to hit the max.

    Ha ha ha.

Yeah, if you like coins with a little substance, the 1/10 oz are out. I have a couple of 1/10 oz, but don't find them terribly satisfying anymore, so I need to get my hands on 1/4 oz or more.
