Hi All, I'd really appreciate your help with identifying this medal. Very little can be found online using the words on the reverse, as far as I can tell. Man the obverse is tremendous isnt it? Any thoughts on where exactly it came from or how many were made? This medal is about the size of a US half dollar. Thanks in advance.
MdM - Monedas de Mexico was doing medals for various commemorations during that time and striking them on blanks that were intended for the 20 and 50 peso gold coins. In this instance it looks like it was struck for the 11th reunion of governors from Latin America and the Philippines in Sept 1974. Of course the dimensions of the piece and the weight are going to be the determinate factor in authenticity and value. The Solar calendar on the obverse is really cool though.
Thanks scottishmoney for getting me on the right track. I believe you are 100% right. It is a 20 Mexican Peso blank planchet (right term?) with a very solid Aztec Solar Calendar strike. I bet the MdM just enlarged the Aztec Calendar found on 20 Mexican Peso gold coins (on sale on Ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mexican-20-...orld_Coins&hash=item20cf2f98b3#ht_1445wt_1397) for this commemorative medal/coin. In any case, the fact that back in 1974 there were only 20-30 governors in Mexico + the Filipino governor, should make this strike/piece quite rare. Hopefully this, combined with the beautiful image, should bring quite a bit more than spot at auction.
I just put this beauty up on Ebay, in case any of you all are interested. http://www.ebay.com/itm/13088844044...LX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649#ht_557wt_1313
