I have this penny which was my grandfathers and was wondering if anyone would know the value of it in this condition. thanks Mike
Hi What you have there is an 1847 FS-LC-1847 -302 [004] Meaning you have an over date URS-1 I-5 L-5 The Obverse the point of the lowest curl is slightly to the right of the inner right curve of the 8 in the date. The base of the 1 is strongly re punched. Look at the base of the 1 you can see there is an small line under it....the one has been re punched Value I would say in Fine cond around $35 to $40.USD. There is also two other variety for this year a 7 over a small 7 and another one that would really pay you a premium of $200 to $400 in your coins condition. sad to say it's the variety listed above.
Take a closer look at the 1 and also consult a red book and Cherry pickers guide first be for you post.
Thanks for the help. I thought it was in great shape for a coin that old. I am new to coin collecting but find the history of it fascinating.
It does appear to have an old cleaning, but it is still a very nice piece for its age. And just for future reference, US 1 cent coins are called cents, not pennies. Keep up the hunt!
For a coin just shy of 170 years it's in great shape...what makes it even more special then the 170 years... is the fact that part of that 170 years it belonged to your grandfather and he passed it on to you! Forget its an over date forget about the dollar value as I be a buyer at $30 retail as to its true worth ...to you its priceless! Here's an item you can pass along to your kids and grand kids. Now the History has a direct link from your Grand Dad on..... Just like my 1812 Bust half it's not the best coin in my collection by retail value but it was given to me by my dad....Priceless! Nice coin enjoy it!!!
While it was cleaned and possibly dug up (due to the porosity), it's still a nice Newcomb variety with the repunched date.
Not an overdate. It does have a repunched date. This is either N-4 or N-27 I can't tell which from the images (Both use the same obv die). I THINK it may be an early state of N-4. This is a piece that needs to be looked at in hand by someone that knows the late dates because N-4 is and R-1, very common, but N-27 is an R5+. the N-4 is basically worth whatever type coin money is, but the N-27 is about three times that amount. I have no idea what variety 1847 FS-LC-1847 -302 [004] refers to. Paddy do you have a cross reference from Cherrypickers # to Newcomb #?
