Let's just say if you want to cash in on the hype, do it quickly, because it's not going to last. Auctions like this only prove that this is a smart time to sell these, not a smart time to buy them. It's the people selling these to cash in on the temporary hype that are going to make money off of them. People buying them at this prices will not be making their money back any time soon, if ever.

It's been about a month since this was posted, and the "bidiots" on eBay continue to bid up on these sets almost twice what they were sold originally at the mint. I really think the apparent scarcity here is a factor.

Sorry, but I have been around WAY too long, seen WAY too many identical situations. Issue comes out, somehow gets some attention, people overpay, set goes down below issue price, idiots lose a lot of money, rinse and repeat.

Its simply there are a lot larger pool of idiots to draw from nowadays. Seems like this is one production matrix the US is leading the world in, production of idiots.

Op, I have no problem whatsoever if you like these coins, like owning them, collecting them, etc etc. Collect what you like, its just here on CT many of us have been around the block, and know long term value has nothing to do with fresh hype, and most hyped coins fail miserably. Its usually the coins everyone quietly forget about that sneak up on you and become a desirable issue.

    Just my opinion.

Agree, medoraman, that there appears to be some "hype" when it comes to these sets, but I think the combination of lower mintage and the fact that the Mint isn't making these en masse anymore accounts for the higher value price. Now, as you point out, whether this continues for the foreseeable future remains to be seen.

Personally, I'm happy these are getting some attention and welcome the increased price as I believe they are very collectible in proof form. These are ideal gifts for children or grandchildren. Now, if the Congress and the Mint see fit to discontinue these $1 Presidential coins and decide to continue and make the paper dollar bill, the more collectible these would become, imo. It seems that collectors are concerned about this and thus, the reason they are getting some play here.

I really hate to keep reviving this thread, but the SOLD OUT 2012 Presidential Proof Set keeps selling for more on the secondary market at eBay, as high as $97 and most recently in the $60-$70 range. I bought a set for $23 at the local coin shop and sold it on eBay recently for $69.95. Either the "bidiots" are misinformed or they know something most collector's don't. . . . Just think what would happen should the 2013 Set sell out unexpectantly at the Mint?? http://www.ebay.com/csc/i.html?clk_...ntial+proof+set&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc

Believe me, they're misinformed. The dust will settle in a year or two and these sets will be worth squanto.........
