Does anyone know where this note is from? I found it in an envelope with 5 notes from various countries & this is the only one I've not been able to place
Yes, it is from Taiwan. "That guy" is Dr. Sun Yat Sen the leader of the Nationalist Chinese that overthrew the Manchu dynasty in 1911. He appears on notes from the banks of the Republic of China, the Japanese puppet banks and the notes from Taiwan. The back is blank. It is a very common note.
Thanks for the help:thumb:, I had assume it was a low value as the others I found it with were but I was curious as it was the only one in the bunch I couldn't identify.
It's Chinese but not from Taiwan. It is a five fen ("5 cent" 伍分) note issued by the Hainan Bank (hainan yinhang 海南银行) in 1949 (38th Year of the Republic of China) and printed in Hong Kong. You can see a similar specimen at this Chinese website. Gary
Saying it was from Taiwan is shorthand for the Nationalist government which was behind the Hainan Bank. By the time the note is issued Hainan and Taiwan are almost all the Nationalists had left.
