Hypothetically speaking…. If a coin was submitted as a 1942-D Washington quarter when in reality it was a 42-D DDO...would PCGS spot it and slab accordingly?

ah no they charge for such a variety notation, unless youpay the fee for such you'll get your coin back in a slab graded as to its grade ...nothing more unless $$$$

Only if you told them it was a variety would they look and mark it such. And it would cost you some $$

gezzzz....well that's not very "Professional"...at a minimal they should tell you and have you pay the diff or return un-graded

now that I think about it...what would they do in the reverse situation....submitted as a DDO and in their "expert" opinion it was not?

    I don't understand?
You send coin to TPGing service. Pay $25 and say grade my coin. They grade it and you get it. Done.

Or you could go to McDonalds and ask and pay for a McRib then say that's not very professional and think they should have thrown in a apple pie. But it doesn't work that way now does it :D

Kept the extra money for the variety and just gave you a coin with out the designation on the holder.
The graders still had to take time to look at it and record it right?

Just like a doctor that you go to see about your allergy's but it's not it's just a cold. You still have to pay the Doc right?

You've got to remember, that grading coins and searching for varieties is an entirely different thing. They grade these coins naked eye, or at best with a quick glance through a 5x loupe. You're paying them to grade; not search and attribute.

And if you pay to attribute and it isn't what you thought it was they still have to examine in for the variety, so they have performed the service and get paid for it even though it isn't the variety.

It's just like back before they slabbed problem coins, when people used to get upset because they paid their fees and then got their coin back in a bodybag. They felt they had paid for grading and since it hadn't been graded they should have gotten their money back. What they were actually paying for was to have the coin examined by a professional and have his opinion rendered. If the opinion was favorable it was slabbed and if it was unfavorable it was bodybagged, but in either case the examination was made and an opinion rendered. Therefore fees for service were collected.

In SOME cases, if a variety is easily and obviously seen, and is of significant value, they will contact the submitter. But that is a rare event.
