This is one of the scarcer date British threepences 1842, but by no means the rarest. This coin is in very worn condition, but still makes £170+. What hope have I of finishing my date runs!? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VICTORIAN-SOLID-SILVER-THREE-PENNY-PIECE-1842-GOOD-CONDITION-FOR-AGE-/251253488953?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMESINDXX%3AIT&nma=true&si=cK6I0G0PlJDRAyPXexPVx72FlW8%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
If you think that's bad, you should see some of the prices that some (real) Chinese coins are going for.
IDK Paddy $261.00 USD is a tad bit much im my book for that coin but again that my book...what's the mintage on that year?
Good question well presented! For most years Krause and other sources list a mintage figure, but for 1842 apparently not - except in proof. Having said that, the values given in Spinks are broadly the same as for adjacent years, so it would seem similar numbers will have been made - in the order of 200000. Bear in mind this date, along with quite a few other threepence dates around that time, were issued primarily for use in the colonies. In Spinks, 1842 is listed as a GBP 10 coin in Fine condition, which is why I was startled by the sale price. The really scarce dates are 1847, 1848 and 1852 listing at 50, 40 and 60 respectively.
