Found this today in CRH and wondering if this is really a die clash. I can't see that it lines up perfectly, but seems consistent in looks with what a die clash would do. Is mostly in the third column space from the right on the memorial bldg. If not a die clash, what would cause this?????
It looks like a die clash judging from the reverse, but it does not look like a typical die clash. The clash in Bay 9 on the reverse is the area right by Lincoln's chin. Looks as if the dies were rotated at the time of the clash. Keep up the hunt!
If you look at Jason Culliver's overlay on the MAD Clashes site it is almost exactly where it is supposed to be. That should be Lincoln's chin in bay 9. It does appear that the clashed chin is shifted ever so slightly toward the top of the memorial. Check out the overlay and it should help you to know what else to look for on your coin. http://www.maddieclashes.com/small-cents.html
From the pic of the obv. and rev. together it appears that there is more evidence of the clash event in bay 3, which should be his coat at the back of the neck. Check in bay 1 or 2 and you may find remnants of the Y in Liberty. I can't tell. Also check around the chin area on the obv. to see if there is any evidence of the clash on the obv. You may be able to detect the columns/bays.
Thanks, Jay4202472000.... I think that I can see the front portion of the bust above bay 8 as well, which correlates to lincoln's beard being off in bay 9 as well. (above where it should be). So it looks to be a clashed die, with only seeing it on the reverse, and it being offset a bit.
