The two of us visited the Red Rose Coin Show for a bit today. The ancient offerings were paltry and overpriced to say the least, but fortunately for me, Bill had this beautiful Carinus for sale which is now mine, so I didn't leave the show empty-handed. The best part of the day was talking coins with Ardatirion in person - we all know of his expertise, but I'm here to tell you he's a walking encyclopedia of archeology and ancient numismatics.
Pretty cool pickup :thumb: As for me, I've yet to meet in person someone that collects ancients. I've talked to a couple of dealers that sold ancients though, at my local coin show.
A dab of verdicare won't hurt. I've used it on some of my other coins where I couldn't tell if the green was a harmless deposit or not.
Sweet lookin' Carinus my good man ... Yah I agree with you guys => the man from CNG certainly seems like he knows his poop!! (cheers Ardatirion!!)
Definitely a nice coin! I have a Carinus in lower grade, similar reverse. I've never met anyone in person that's interested in ancient coins. Not even at a coin shop. lol
Great pickup JA! I also think it's very cool that you met someone from the forum in person and were able to talk ancients with them. Sharing the hobby in person makes it all the more fun. I believe the reverse on that Carinus is the same or very close to the one I posted on here the other day. The details on your coin are much more crisp though. Well done!
Thanks for the kind words, John! The green spots are surface deposits and should be removable by someone with a bit of skill and a steady hand. I wouldn't mess with it, though - I'm too lazy.
I'm fine with the deposits. If it doesn't need to be cleaned for the sake of conservation, I actually prefer the look.
Nice coin. More importantly, nice piece of history. Carinus represented the end of a short-lived dynasty (AD 282-285)with great potential. He was killed by his own men, despite having possibly successfully fought Diocletian. Carus »»» Numerian + Carinus. Here's dad (Carus): (Mine) Both the father Carus and his younger brother Numerian died from strange circumstances. Carus died by either lightning, a wound, or disease. Numerian died from either an infection or murder. Strange times, that third century. guy P.S. I, too, appreciate Ardatirion's knowledge and insight.
True for me as well. I have never met another person who owned ancient coins. I have seen a few dealers but collectors never....until recently I met a fellow CT member - Collect89 at a coin show in Naugatuck CT and hes breaking into ancients- a wonderful experience- I shared with him my Tetradrachms and he shared with me his Super rare 1912 S nickles. A wonderful experience all around.
Cool coin John. I have to admit i am a lot more jealous of being able tobhang out wth Bill more than the coin though. Make that coin a Vahran II and it might be more of a tossup, lol.
