I have this 1893 penny and I noticed what I think is a re-cut 3 (just a bit) in the date. When I researched varieties of this coin I found a few mentions of a recent discovery of a 3/2 that is described like what my coin has but I don't know if mine is one or not. Here is a close up of the date area. Any thoughts?
Are you talking about that slight fork at the end of the center stroke? I can't see any connection between that and an underlying "2", that I see no sign of.
Thank you for your reply Yes that is what I am talking about. Have you ever seen a variety of this coin before? I found this a description ("spike below the centre bar of the 3") and have seen other coins on ebay which have a similar look but I haven't been able to find a clear photo of it to compare. Ok.. I just found this: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1893-over-victoria-penny-excessively-220531431
Hi Lots of Coppers, What you have, if it is the one in the picture, is in fact a 1893/2. Your's is the clearest I have seen. This coin is notated on page 89 of Michael Gouby's recent book, "The British Bronze Penny." Nice find! Regards, Bob C. On the Web at: www.RLCcoins.com
