Hello everyone! I recently picked up this 83-O Morgan because I really loved the coin's wonderful toning and at $35 it was really a very good deal too. Anyway, I was curious to hear what your thoughts are regarding the "O" mint mark. As you can see from the pictures, the O is somewhat slanted on a diagonal rather than being truly vertical. I would say that the top of the O is pointed roughly towards the coin's 2 o'clock position. I am wondering if this is a common occurrence with New Orleans minted Morgans and if it is considered to be an error (a VAM possibly)? Lastly, what do you think this coin would grade out at and what would be the approximate value of the coin? All responses are much appreciated. Thanks!
First, all Morgans are VAM's. You can start with the VAM-8 "O Tilted" and go from there for comparisons to your coin. http://www.vamworld.com/1883-O+VAMs Since the mintmark was punched into the die by hand, there are dozens of off-center mintmarks in the whole series. Chris
There's wear on the old gal. AU55 looks about right off these pictures. That's about what you paid. Her lovely toning might fetch her a tad better in the market.
I don't know about that. The hair above the ear is typically where you will see evidence of a weak strike. The photo below is graded by NGC MS64. Chris
I don't like the look of this one, maybe because of the pictures. But to me it looks lifeless despite the toning, so I am thinking it's a details coin.
