Hey gang... My employee Evan picked this coin out of a dealers silver dollar box while making his rounds today. He got it for $45.... He... and I think it's a mishandled proof... Thoughts?
I don't know, Matt. I've got one in a PCGS 64PL that looks almost identical. All of the denticles are square and the devices and legends are well-struck. There were only 762 proofs struck that year according to QDB. Chris
It sure looks like a proof strike, Matt. The depth of strike and preparation of the planchet looks very much like a Morgan proof to me. I have one of them and the look of the fields on the planchet is unmistakeable. If so, you probably have a PR55 there, as it has proof qualities, but has evidence of being handled and possibly lightly circulated.
I still have my doubts, David. Bowers says that the strike for this year is above average, and I just finished examining the rest of mine....3 - PCGS 64, 1 - NGC 64 and 1 - ANACS 64....and they all have similarly well-defined strikes. Chris
I have doubts that is a proof but it is possible. You see it in hand and have experience Either way it's nice for $45!
I don't have nearly enough experience with Morgans to offer a well thought out and productive response, but I know one thing, for $45, I would have snatched that up in a heartbeat.
Matt That's one pretty coin and for $45 you scored big time...It looks like a proof to me....congrats nice pick up.
If it isn't a proof (and I think it may well be), it is an AU proof like Morgan, and a coin that pretty is a great find for $45.
Based on the pics I'm gonna have go with not a Proof. The rims seem well rounded, the coin looks to have ordinary bag marks & rim dings, appears to have been struck with slightly misaligned dies and exhibits light finning. None of those things are typically found on Proofs. Die diagnostics may prove me wrong, but based on what I see, I don't expect it. That said, I see signs of rough handling but I see no signs of wear on the coin.
I'd say your employee picked up a really nice business strike coin - gees I'd pay $45 for that one all day long, and tomorrow too.
I own a few Morgans but I sure can't make the call from images. I will say this....It's struck up to beat the band!! Nice find for the price you paid....DEX
