I'm testing the waters and I have bought three coins since I got busted over a month ago. I feel like the kid sneaking some of Paw's corn squeasin's. In typical fashion, I have bought one Greek, one Roman Republic and one Roman Imperial. I'll start with the Roman Republic.

    L CENSORINUS AR Denarius
OBV: Laureate head of Apollo right
REV: L CENSOR, the satyr, Marsyas, standing left with wineskin over shoulder; behind him, column surmounted by draped figure (Minerva?)
    Struck at Rome, 82 BC
    3.66g, 17mm
    Cr363/1d, Marcia 24

Fantastic, Mr. Bing! I'll take the time to read the text when I got home from work, but well done on the coin! It's a beauty.

Great coin and excellent background. I see you really have taken a liking to the republican era coinage. Assembling all those fabulous types, umm she finds out the punishment will be severe, she might take the dog house away and leave you tied to a tree in the back. Now you live in Florida, I am sure even this time of year it wouldn't be pleasant It could be worse she could take away your online coin chat. Then what?! I was nearly captured the other day when a large ptolemy arrived and the little lady found a "french newspaper" on the coffee table, and I think she became suspicious, that something was purchased.

I am seeing your focusing on the Republic. You should start looking for some coins of the Greek cities in Italy. Some of those coins are real gnarly. Now I see you picked this Genes did you just happen to like this coin for its style or are you trying to collect one of each of the families?

No, I'm not attempting to get one of each of the family groups, although that might be a nice lofty goal. In this case, I liked the coin and the story. As I said in another thread, I find myself being pulled to reverses with interesting details and story lines. You are correct, however, that I have gravitated to RR coins here of late, but I did purchase one Impeial Roman and one Greek yesterday. I need to cool my jets and kinda ease my way back unto the runway, so-to-speak.

Thanks all for the comments. I like this coin and I'm glad you all enjoyed it and the background information.

I appreciate the elegant simplicity of this coin: the anepigraphic obverse, and the handsome, lucid devices. It's definitely an example of less-is-more.

I was watching one of these on Ebay tonight. I think it sold for under $30. I paid substantially more than that, but the one on Ebay was fairly worn. Yours has good eye appeal. Is the silver crystalized?
