Howdy All Ranch asked if I would post a photo of this coin of mine and I just couldn't get photos that I liked--so I went and found that DLRC still had the photos on their site so here is a link to it... http://www.davidlawrence.com/auctions/viewitem.cfm?Inventory=151302&auc=75&lotid=76031&imagebase= I got the coin cheaper than they had first asked for---they wanted a BIN of $150 and I held out and they put it up for auction and I got it for $126. NGC has only graded 5 PF66* and this is one :hammer: While its not blasting with CAMEO or anything I really like it and it fits in my PF66 Franklin set (2 to go and I'll be done--then 4 to upgrade!!!) The one thing that I think held this coin back from a PF67 is that there is a small black dot on the head--its hard to see in the photos...buts it is about middle of the head...and that is what holds it back--the front of the coin has some CAM but the back has none. The marks and lines are on the holder--not the coin... Hope ya'll enjoy-- I hope to post some photos of my whole set of PF66 Franklins someday---from what I can tell of all of the Registry set NONE are completly matched in grade---and I can't find any listing of anyone ever doing a matched set of these coins---maybe mine is the first! Speedy
Hey Speedster... How are ya? I buy thru DLRC as well..and I looked at that coin! I was going to get it because it was the year I was born in...my only reservation is that all of my collection is PCGS..so I thought I would stick with that! Dang nice coin young man!! Dang nice!!:high5: :high5: RickieB:high5: :high5:
Yeah I think it is a really nice coin---it goes right along with my 1954 PF66CAM NGC. Most of the PF66 Franklin set is in NGC slabs--only 1 in ICG and 3 in PCGS---I may watch and try to buy new ones or at least upgrade the ones in thoes slabs to NGC with maybe CAM. I have the 1962 and 63 in CAM so I would like to hunt down a 60 and 61 with CAM but IIRC that is harder than it sounds Speedy
nice speedy! From what i have read they give stars to proofs if one side is cameo and the otehr is not, but not always... so what would you rather have, a deep cameo or a cameo star?
Well on some coins I would much rather have DCAM but on others I would love a CAM even if it didn't have a *!...I think a 1959 is one of the harder ones to find in CAM...---but for this coin I would rather have a DCAM then a CAM* IMHO. Speedy
I agree that this coin got the star designation because of the uneven cameo from front to back. Great coin & thanks for sharing...Mike
I'll never fully understand the * designation. One of my most hated things about the TPG system. Bah! With out without the *, it's a fantastic looking coin.
I believe the star designation grew out of people buying graded coins sight unseen, you may purchase a coin that technically grades high but is ugly. If the coin is a star the buyer knows that the coin has superb eye appeal. Talking to dealers a LOT of coins are purchased and traded through dealer networks with no one actually seeing the coin until they get it. Usually the dealers are trying to fill want lists and trading stock around. Before TPG's the network was much slower, and customers would have to wait for major shows to get refreshed stock. I assume that this was also the reason that NGC was using "T" and "W" designations for a very short time (T = toned W = white) as it allowed for a more descriptive way for dealers to request specific coins for customers. I have also met a couple of people who go around the country to shows specifically to fill want lists for dealers, they are "dealers dealers". I would love that job
Young Man!!!!!!!!! Heck I'm five years older than you and only call my son that. Does that make coins from my birth year antiques?
Thanks guys---I started this set soon after I started collecting abotu 5 years ago---a friend gave me an 1956 ICG PF66 Franklin and without looking at how much it would cost I said I'm going to do a set of these all in PF66---after buying some I found out how much the set would cost and thought I would never be able to do it---but since then some of the prices have gone down and some have gone up--I've gotten some heck of some deals and am almost done---If I can find some I like I hope to be done with this set soon---but I'm really picky and take my time so it might take me years and years.
