1883 Shield Nickel without rays-repunched motto obverse?

    Um, I don't think the motto is punched into the die.

    Looks to be a over date the 3 very nice coin you gotto love these old Shields as they had more varieties known than any other series. :thumb:

    I'm seeing longacre doubling and nothing else. Not seeing an overdate either.
    Keep up the hunt!

    no not so much of an over date even thro I do see something coming from the top of the 3 and a shadow on the second 8 on the right side. But since it's been another 18 hour day my eyes are done...and the picture wont allow me to blow it up to see the date better.

    Don't think it is 1883/2 variety. But you can check it on shieldnickels.net. As for the motto I think it is die wear or chipping - you can see it better in some old snap shots I took of one of my 1883 shield nickels. I just though it was cool when I bought it.

    Here are a couple of others from the date and the arrow. The shaft is gone from the arrow and the bottom of the one 8 is filled.
