image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg I seen this 1878 S trade dollar for sale. What do you think, is it fake, if real what is grade an a good price for it?

seems like it should be in a slab being that high of a grade.

I would guess that one is made in china...

Looks genuine from here, but been polished up pretty good.

Mind giving us the weight, just to be sure?

I do not have the weight. The guy is asking $1200 for it, he also has some other high grade coins. If I get a chance this weekend an if he has not sold it I will weigh it.

Looks possibly cleaned. In any case, assuming real, it's a large S broken 4 variety.

Never seen a Trade dollar that clean and that well struck that wasn't a proof . I'd pass unless I could weigh it and see it in hand . If fake it's a darn good one . I mean this coin doesn't have a hit on it , and looks almost sandblasted , if real and uncleaned this would be a 5 digit coin at least . IMHO

My first thought is that it is a fake. It is by far the best looking one I've ever seen. Just looks to good to be true. You would think someone would have slabbed it by now.

Looks like there is a pretty sizable hit on the rim at 12:00. Perhaps that is why it isn't slabbed or at least isn't anymore.

Looks like seller has some decent coins not easy to come by..this may be sellers gem. does look proof like .. the not graded part is strange ..

Everything on it is correct for a type2 obverse and type 2 reverse . Could of be an impaired proof if it wasn't an S mint . I wish we had the weight

I just noticed the beard on the eagles head looks too big and sticks out too far compared to any of my type 2 reverses . Also the Arrow heads don't have the shaft extending into the heads , though this could just look this way because of the pics or something like whizzing done to make the coin appear cleaner .

Based on the other coins he's selling, a solid reputation and return policy, take a shot. I don't mind shipping back expensive coins if they don't meet my expectations.

Shouldn't there be a CC on the reverse for that kind of money?

Just wondering what book you used . I need a good book on Trade Dollars , Breens Encyclopedia doesn't cut it , niether does Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars , by Bowers . Willems book is a great read , but not for finding varieties .
