So this may be a dumb question, but why does it appear that the 43d is the least appreciated (value wise) of all the war nickels? It has the lowest mintage, by far, of all the wars yet falls in the middle to lower range of values in the mint full steps grade. Am I missing something?
Ok what 43 D do you wish to talk Value? the WDDO-001 or the WDDR-001? Both are Rare as a variety. Or just the plain 1943 D Nickel. Yes your point is true that the 43D 15,294,000 mintage however the two varieties are for the most over shadowed by the 43P 43/2 and the double eye variety. The point most collectors don't truly realize most all War Nickels had some sort of error or variety. Lets take your question to another series The Morgan Dollar why is the 1893O Mintage 300,000 whos red book value in VF-20 is $400 and compare it to the 1895 O mintage 450,000 and red book value in VF-20 $750. or the 1899 P Mintage 330.000 Red book value in VF-20 $180.00 . To me it's about wha'ts hot and what's not! It's just some coins always seem to bring in their values and others don't.
Doug....thanks for the reply! Thats a good point, but with its mintage only ~15% of the 43s you would think there would be at least the same amount of higher grades around. I find it hard to to believe something with such a lower mintage would have a better chance of being preserved verse the substantially higher mintages. To me, it looks like a buying opportunity....and a chance to stock up at under valued prices.
Thanks Paddy....I know you've got a at least a couple of 43d's lying around. Yeah...the question I had was around the plain 43d. You'd think it would have a large following given that it's the lowest mintage.....but I guess those S's always seem to be the hotter coin.
as to your full steps grade: the occurence of 43-Ds with 5 full steps is 1 in 2 and 6 full steps common, so they wouldn't really command a premium for steps because so many of them have full steps
they are listed in "A Guidebook of Buffalo and Jefferson Nickels" by Q. David Bowers I own quite a few books that he has written and this series of RedBooks as Whitman Publishing calls them are excellent sources of info like this.
I look at every 1943 P nickel for the 3/2 not found one so far and I kind of know what to look for, but no luck.
