Is it a dinar or what? And what would its value be? Thanks in advance.

    Vroomer,
That is indeed an ancient gold dinar, could be from almost any Islamic country,Syria to North Africa and minted between about 700-1600 AD.I can't tell for sure since I cant read the card.Maybe our friend Thamerofarabia will see this and translate.
    Value can range from $200-$1100+

Vroomer,it looks like one that was issued by the Islamic Empire. You're right about our friend from Kuwait. He can translate this,as I can't.

My knowledge of Arabic is rudimentary, but since this thread has been here all day I will give it a shot. The caption below the coin refers to that it is a dirham, and refers to the caliph (Commander of the Faithful), and the name I pick out is of Caliph Abdul Malik bin Marwan, who would be the 5th caliph of the Umayyad dynasty? (big guess). the UAE came out with some stamps showing dirhams from this time period, I will look and attach one if it seems to apply. Hope this helps, or rather, hope someone else can translate better than I can.

OK, there is a date in the caption, 77 AH, that probably refers to the first islamic coins issued, which happened around 700 AD, under Abdul Malik bin Marwan.

    Thanks Acanthite,
Here is an Umayyad coin, 697AD that looks suspiciously like yours Vroomer,in fact,I think it might be the same one.The cool thing is,this is the very first series of these gold coins ever minted. It would be issued under Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan (685-705CE) as Acanthite stated, only 60 odd years after the death of Mohammed himself.Nice!:)

Any idea on value for one? Because I (actually my little brother working for me here, again...) have the chance to buy one. :D :)

Don't know the value, but I strongly suggest that you get the coin authenticated before buying it.

Let's go buy some raw unauthenticated gold - [IMG]

Considering my extreme ignorance about US coinage in general, and US gold in particular, I wasn't going to say anything about the couple that looked edgy to me/

Gold Dirham. Ruler: Khalifa 'abd Almalik Bin

MARWAN, ruled 691-705 AD. The minting place is not mentioned, in the Arabic description. Year: 77 AH = 696 AD.
