I know general storage has been discussed in the past but mine pertains to a specific question of sorts. I have a set of presidential dollars that I'm waiting to transfer to a dansco album one the set is complete. That's in another 3 years, end of 2015. As of right now I have them individually stored in the yellowish brown coin envelopes that you can buy in mass at staples. Is this ok for the length of time i'm storing them? I just don't want them to discolor. Likewise, I don't have to have to buy 50 flips of varying sizes, again I'll be doing this with an album type set as well over the summer, assembling it and not placing in album until complete. So any thoughts on the best yet most convenient storage method?

Those envelopes, in all likelyhood, contain sulpher. Put them in milar - not PVC - flips. A small investment will become invaluable!

Since you seem to plan to just store ( and not display) for a few years and then put into an album, I would put them individually in food quality zip lock bag ( maybe sandwich size )and put all in a sealable plastic food container. Food quality bags do not contain PVC or harmful additives. I would not recommend for carrying around or showing much, but this would be fine for the surfaces.

I don't understand why you don't go ahead and start filling the Dansco now. That would eliminate the need for any storage materials whatsoever.

I would start filling the album now. Is there a reason not to do this? Collectors often have an unfilled album that they work on filling. I definitely would not store them in freezer bags or envelopes. Those materials will chemically alter coins through toning or deposit residue. You can buy small mylar flips for a modest price from a coin dealer and put the coins in those for storage, but since you plan on getting the album, just get the album.

It sounds like the coins discoloring is your biggest concern. Since the coins are made of the most reactive metal ever used for a US coin, and since the coins of that composition have been plagued with discoloring and spotting problems since they came out 13 years ago, it is almost a certainty that the coins will discolor if they are kept in those paper envelopes, or in an album.

I never tried with the Presidential coins, but since they are exactly the same as the Sackys results should be the same, proper storage and individual hard plastic holders (I used Air-Tites) was the only thing I ever found that even had a chance at stopping the coins from discoloring or spotting.

With your proposed method - good luck.

    definer definitely....! LOL

Out of curiosity, what do you think about Kointains? I use Air-Tites for my higher grade coins but use Kointains for my circulated Franklins.

I never really cared for Kointains for a couple of reasons. 1 - the plastic is just too thin to provide good protection in my opinion. 2 - I've never seen a coin holder in my life that is harder to open than they are. And even once opened, getting the coin out is an even bigger pain.

Over the years I've tried just about everything. But for the level of protection they give, easy of use, and cost per coin, I think Air-Tites are the best coin holder there is.

Not at all, just truthful. But sometimes the truth hurts.
