I just got back from the coin shop. It came back AU55 ! I have consigned it to them for sale . I just cant hold onto it for the price it can bring. I will keep just about everything else I have recieved from my gramps collection but I need the money . Thanks to everyone for their well wishes.
Way to go!!! I wish you could hold on to it---this is like a once in a lifetime coin to be able to own---I don't know how much the dealer can get for you but if you really are set on selling it I would send it to Heritage as I bet they could get much more money for you---as they have millions of buyers just wanting super rare coins like this. Speedy
Speedy is correct here Numis. a Local coin shop is not going to have the client base to bring a true value for that coin. Contact Heritage, Superior or one of the big boys to sell this coin for you. (my bet is this local dealer is making that contact and thats where the coin will end up anyway) Heritage sold a AU58 in April for $46,000.00 I am sure they could get in the $40-43 range for this one.
You could always give it to me! haha, that is a once in a life time coin, but if you need to sell it for the money, then go ahead. Anything else in your grandfathers collection? -Rob
Very nice numisfun but Jim and Speedy are right and that Heritage is the way too go with this coin. Good Luck on what ever you decide.
Congratualations! An NGC AU-58 realized $46,000 (including Buyer's Premium) on April 7, 2006 and an NGC AU-50 realized $25,875 (including Buyer's Premium) on January 15, 2005, so you should be able to get at least $35,000. That dealer is way over his head trying to sell your coin. IMO, Heritage is the ONLY way to go for your sale. Did I say congrats already?
Congratulations! Au-55 will bring strong money. I personally would have sold the coin through heritage as opposed to the dealer. I think heritage could yield you several grand more, but I may be mistaken.
:thumb: Wow. Talk about awesome. Congratulations! If only everyone could have the same experience.:mouth:
Numifun, I hope I am not out of line with this, but I talk to Bill Walker at Heritage about your coin and he said that they sold a AU55 last year for $34,000 and that with the market the way it is that your coin may go higher. He would like too talk to you about your coin if you like. He can be reach at 1-800-872-6467 and just ask for Bill Walker. Good Luck. Paul
No your not out of line. I just recieved my check from the dealer I consigned it with. It was sold in Baltimore last week. I recieved $32,500.00 out of the deal. Thanks for everyones help & advice. Personally I dont think I made a bad decision, from what I read the with fees for that coin at Heritage I would have netted close to the same amount & it would have taken longer. Im happy with the outcome & that is what is important to me.
That is grate. I'm glad everthing work out and you were able too sell it that fast. So how about a loan? Just kidding! Now for the second decision you have to make. Taxes!!!
Numisfun, now you could go ahead & buy yourself a nice treat.Who knows, you might buy some computer equipment,or even some more coins. Aidan.
Taxes will be a killer, short term enjoy the gift, hire a tax adviser you may get a break indicating that it was inheritance taxes vs income taxes. You net may bea lot lower.
Make sure that an estate return was filed, or, if you already have filed the return, amend it, to the value as of the date of death or 6 months thereafter, your choice on value, then you will only pay income taxes on the increase in value since that date. Hopefuly it has not been too long since the date of death. Also, it would probably be taxed at long tern capital gains, 20% plus your state's rate. Congratulations. Tax advice is available, rates: one choice unc Buffalo per comment.
