The journey or the destination?

So is the enjoyment of coin collecting the path that brings you to another great find? Or are you only completely satisfied when you finally have that final coin for the set? I guess both are fun, but when I was young my favorite part of a family vacation was the long car ride to get there.

I think the journey is it for me. But, if I had to try and explain that, it's not like I'm traveling down a well lit and paved road with a destination in mind. I'm more a guy wandering around in the woods not ready to admit he's lost.

There is no "final" coin for me. I have multiple sets going at the same time, I've completed a couple but as I'm doing that I'm already looking for coins for a different set. So I suppose I like the traveling rather than the destination, it's certainly been true in the past -- I love road trips for the sake of traveling in new territory...

I don't collect by sets. I have a particular series that I focus solely on, and that is mostly unpublished and practically unending. So it is undoubtedly the journey for me!

It's the journey for me too. The hunt is more fun than the kill. A good example would be my search for a group of 16 counterstamped coins with an alpha-numeric relationship. It's an enigmatic grouping that has so far defied explanation. I thrive on this type of challenge, not only to understand their purpose, but to acquire the complete set of coins. So far I have 10 of the 16 pieces in my collection. As soon as I acquire one I'm off looking for the next. I have no reasonable expectation of ever completing the set but I'll never give up the hunt. The more I think about it, the more I wonder if I really want to find that 16th coin. More fun looking I think.

I tend to agree with BRandM -- I get the coin, log it in, put it in the album or whatever and maybe look at it for a short time, but the hunt immediately begins, it picks up where I left off, on to the next coin. I begin thinking about it, maybe circle around it for a few days (or until paycheck is deposited) and then decide to go for it. It's definitely a process, a journey...

I think the journey is more exhilarating. Getting a coin you have wanted for a while is also exciting, but it passes quickly (with or hopefully without buyers remorse..). Definitely the journey for me.

Like most it's always nice to find a coin and get that nagging monkey off my back. On the flip side like most, it feels weird and I wonder "now what". So I go back to the hunt. There is something nice about the hunt and checking new listing. It's like a box or chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.

"The point of a journey, is not to arrive". Or, so said 3 wise men from Canada. I fully subscribe to that theory. It's not as much fun if you no longer have the excitement of the chase.

I agree. It's the experience of the journey, not so much the destination. I have completed three sets of coins so far. After one or two years of ownership, I sold them. I do not miss them near as much as I wanted them.
