For GSA submissions, will PCGS allow you to submit the encased coin? Do you get charged a regular submission fee?

Also, as far as GSA coins are concerned, do people prefer NGC since you get to keep the GSA holder?

Most collectors I know prefer to keep them in the GSA case. There is an advantage and disadvantage to this.

    >NGC does not offer a guarantee if it is graded in the GSA case.

    >If you opt for NGC to grade it in the case, you can still save the outer box to keep it in for possible resale.

I don't know what the PCGS policy is for removal.

Do collectors consider this when accounting for the "grade" issued by NGC? Also, is it just a sticker or something attached to the case?

Most veteran collectors I know "buy the coin, not the slab".

NGC utilizes an adhesive "tamper-evident" band with the NGC logo, grade and the disclaimer I mentioned above about the guarantee, and this band is placed completely around the case near the bottom. There is also a "tamper-evident" strip that goes over the middle of the top edge of the case from front to back.

I would recommend NGC, I have one with their band in MS-63 PL that I sent in and love it :thumb:

  7. Never mind, I guess they still do.

As of about a year ago they still did (and I haven't heard anything about the band being changed, but it's possible...)

I could have sworn that they (NGC) were either going to, or were considering stopping this; a notification-type email comes to mind, but maybe I am mistaken.

As for PCGS, yes... GSAs must be submitted in the original holder to receive the designation. They remove the coin/coins and grade as if raw. IIRC, there is no extra fee for the designation.

I just went through the NGC news archives, and this is the most recent release concerning GSA Morgans in the original case. This article is about the assignment of the plus (+) designation. There is no other release about the GSA cases after this date.

PS. The link above also shows a good photo of what a graded GSA case would look like.

Thank you. Looks like this is going to be one of those unimportant things that drive me to sleepless nights; I know that I heard or read something about this, but darned if I can recall where if it was not from NGC.

  12. I thought I did as well. Doubt if I will lose sleep though.

When I read your first post, I thought that maybe you were thinking the same as I was, but maybe we are wrong. It is just one of those things - like a song that you know who the artist is, and it's the tip of your tongue, but you just cannot remember. Not life altering, but is just enough to be annoying. :)

I know that NGC has been offering onsite grading specials for Morgan and Peace dollars at most of the major shows for the last couple years. Is it possible that they may have excluded GSA Morgans from one or more of these shows for that special? That's about the only thing that comes to my mind.
