Nope! It's fake, not altered, and there were only two mintmarks used and neither one of them looks like this. http://www.vamworld.com/1893-CC+Reverses Chris
It is not even a good fake. Low quality Chinese fake. Some of them are good, where collectors are actually fooled. This is not one of them.
You're right Chris , but like I said I didn't even look at the coin or MM , after looking at the date I knew it wasn't good , but looking further it's a complete fake .
Would you mind providing more details about where the listing was? The Japanese writing is very "innocent" as if the person who labeled it did not know it was fake. It just says: US Morgan Dollar 1893 CC. These things usually say 'rare' or 'wow' or have some silly price or other eye catching phrase written on them.
1893cc is a very good date for CC dollars, and is often faked. My feeling on ALL CC dollars is, unless you know Morgans, don't even consider raw ones. The slab does add to the acquisition cost, but at least you have authenticity confirmed. Only experienced collectors should consider raw Morgans of any good dates--look at the PCGS price guide to get an idea of good dates, if you don't know them--it is free online: http://www.pcgs.com/Prices/PriceGuideDetail.aspx?MS=1&PR=1&SP=1&c=744&title=Morgan+Dollar
I bought this one raw at the Scotsman Auction table at the FUN Show about 2008, but I have no doubt that it is authentic. It has a couple of scratches on the obverse and would have only graded F12 or so, but it is the year my maternal grandmother was born and I believe that it has a cud between 8 & 9 o'clock. Chris
