Here is a list of finds from the Baltimore/Washington Coin Convention yesterday 11/10/06. All nickels of course! 1942-P RPM#9 1942-S RPM#16 (2) 1943-P RPM#15 1943-S RPM#15 1944-P RPM#4 (2) 1945-D RPM#13 1945-D RPM#45 (2) 1946-S RPM#? ** 1952 Full Steps DDO 1982-D DDR Spent a total of about $75 +$16 for parking! Always come away with a good handful of RPM's and doubled Dies to add to my book!
A worker had to hand punch the die with the letter of the mint. Sometimes they filled in the letter and punched the die again. Or they changed the letter when the die was shipped to another mint. Well sometimes the punch bounced when striking the hard metal surface of the die. So you get a double impression, or doubling of the mintmark. I'm told that after 1990 they no longer hand punched dies.
Yes I have some too. But it all depends on what year and what condition. Also the denomination plays a part. Mostly, if it is listed in coin guides then it is sought after. But not so well known RPMs are not eagerly wanted. This collectibility factor influences the price.
