I have a Walking Liberty Half Dollar AU58 in a slab. Long story short, I got stuck with it because I didn't notice it until weeks after I bought it but it looks like it got left in a hot car, (heater on) on a very cold night and got moisture inside the slab. As a result it has this funk on it and I'm thinking about busting open the slab and washing the coin with a mild soap, Woolite? Anyone ever done this or have any ideas! Comments?

Does the tpg'd that slabbed it have any guarantees against environmental damage occurring within their "airtight" slab? That kinda thing upsets me. If we can't even depend on them for the protection they claim slabs afford to coins, and grading is subjective, what real purpose do they serve?

Who said TPG slabs are supposed to be airtight?

All the Tpg today will re-slab it for about $15.00 +S/H.
Ngc will take the funk off it But my slab in the Ngc/ncs

There are two things that should be kept in mind and I realize the OP did not touch upon the second. The first is that without images, it reads as though the WLH may have been dipped prior to certification and that it turned in the holder. The second is that slabs aren't airtight and no TPG claims they are.

Regarding cleaning, I would never use any type of chemical on a coin. You simply do not know what the reaction could be. Long soaks in distilled water are always safe, and can remove a lot of stuff. Just replace the water every few days, and use at minimum half a gallon at a time.

IDK about the slab stuff, but would listen to the experts here about that.

Leave it alone, sell it, and buy another.

Agreed. I think almost any intervention on the OPs part with negatively affect the value.

Absolutely agree, not worth the time, nor expense. If you think you have problems now, just wait abit. Confined moisture will
    destroy it, numis-wise.

The moisture in the slab can be rectified without cracking it, but not any damage. If you wish to keep the slab, wrap it in a hot pad ( intended for contact with the human body), and gently heat until it is warm. Then remove and put it in a low humidity environment until it cools down, and equilibrium established. If you don't like it anyway, sell as advised above.

I know we're not supposed to clean coins. I don't know about washing them, though. :D
