Personally, after reading and reviewing all comments on this site.... I suggest submitting any coin worth over 200.00, any coin thats shows big increases of valve from one grade to the next highest or any coin that is commonly faked ot countterfeited. ...............just sayin...............but I am relatively new and usually just try to soak up knowledge from these Numismatists ( all of them)......................
If you do nothing else than put the coin in the holder...yes. It's a chemical process that must be treated chemically. An airtite will protect the coin from being damaged mechanically...but will do nothing to stop that chemical process.
I'd leave it alone. Certainly don't clean it. Doubtful about slabbing due to the verdigris, so just leave it as an AU details coin.
If you dont want it graded id get something to put it into that way you can display it and keep it in the family and that way it lowers the chance of loosing a small coin like that its a beautiful coin and i love F.E. cents id get it slabed if it were mine very nice coin good luck on your decision
OK, not an expert on this, but I am a chemist. Verdigris is evidence of a chemical reaction which will continue if more reactants are present. Reactants include moisture and substances that can be in the air. So if you protect it from moisture (easy enough with dessicant packs) and air (moderately impossible) you will stop any further degradation. Now, you can clean up the verdigris that is present and protect it from further damage. I don't know if he would mind, but you could contact one of our members called BadThad who makes a product called VerdiCare which I use and have faith in. Either contact Thad or read some about VerdiCare (Google it) to get more information or at least visit a coin shop and get a plastic holder to put it in to protect it from mechanical (and a lot of further chemical) harm. Beautiful coin and great family momento, enjoy it.
