I do, for a laugh. Its amazing how they talk up the most common of coins and make people believe they are rare... right now they are hawking some first strike gold eagles for $999. earlier he was selling 1978 proof sets for $20 usually it just makes my blood pressure go up, probably not good for my health.
One of the advantages of living in an area with a lot of good over-the-air TV signals is not having to subscribe to cable, which means I can avoid most of the coin-show vultures.
I also tuned into the other shopping channel coin show, they where selling the anniversary gold set for 9000 I like to torture myself
afraid i missed out on that one ranch hand. The two i watch is probably more than i should but it is truly amazing to watch them work you just have to wonder who buys from these people. I just watched the coin boys sell 20 sets of the silver anniversary sets (raw) like the one's i am getting for 100 bucks , for $299 in a few minutes. that reminds me Monk is going to have on some new shows.
These shows are amazing, I get a real good laugh too as I usually have a price guide handy and yell back at the TV about how people are getting ripped off. BTW the only way I can watch that guy or the HSN guys is with the MUTE button engauged.
they never seem to have anything really good on those shows, always common date stuff tey try to pass off as rare. I heard the guy actually try to compare ASE's to morgans! "look at this morgan dollar, its worth $1000 in MS63 and these silver eagles are MS69!" what the heck? who bys this stuff?
I think its great. let them keep porking people. All it means for us is are collections are worth more. lol I have only bought 1 thing from the HSN. that was the one random time i got 20/ 2006 ngc /FS/ ASE for 399, lol they screwed up & I just happen to get watching at around 5 in the morning while giving my son a bottle. I was jst flipping along with bottle in hand, my son started to slip down from my lap when feeding him so i drop my clicker and it stoped on the HSN channel i looked up and saw 399 looked again and it was for 20 slabbed ms 69 ase, I did the math fast in my head and thougt, SHEESH thats cheap. 20 bucks each slabbed NGC, it would cost me more to buy and get them slabbed and there marked with that hoax First strike crap..hmm. grabbed the phone mighty fast. Then the seccond i hung up the price jumped to 699 and they started saying , oops on we made a mistake. lol I PORKED THEM for a change. If you lucky you get to rip them off. I did, it gos to show how stupid they are. Jst after that they started selling 10 so called BU GEM COMMAN date Morgans for the low low price of 899. lol I love laughing at them and like all of you i wounder who the hell really bys from them any why. But you guys gotta addmit i did get my self a pretty good deal that morning. Also I know its od. but i have found my self yelling at the screen. because these guys ate the biggest crooks. They would sell there mother corps.
I really hate to defend the show... but I would watch it at 5am, and being a former part-time coin collector at various times in my life, it re-piqued my interest in coins. The coins do look pretty, and they are very enthusiastic about them! They were always talking about State Quarters, ASE's, etc... and not having collected for about 20 years it was kinda informative since I was unfamiliar with all the new US stuff. Of course I checked Ebay prices on the same types of sets they were selling, and found that they were ripping their buyers off so I never bought anything, but I visit the Mint kiosk in D.C regularly and recently bought 3 20th Anniversery ASE sets online from the US Mint. Indirectly, its how I found this forum! I was searching for info on Ebay seller ABON on Yahoo which led me here and saved me from making a tragic mistake in believing their made-up grading service (SGS).
Come on guys, those TV sellers are great for creating enemies. I just feel sorry for those buyers when they will (eventually) try to sell their coins. When they do and are offered 1/10th of what they paid, they'll feel that all coin dealers are crooks (not true) and then learn to hate the hobby. It is sad that they can continue to do their thing. But, I had heard that HSN was doing away with the coin segment, apparently they are now making enough money to keep them on the air.
Did you see last night when they were comparing the 2006 anniversary coins to the 1995W ASE. They said something like a 1995W in this PR70 grade goes for 15 THOUSAND dollars and we are offering the three coin sets for only (I think) 549 or 599. This is a once in a life time offer.... that was when I turned the set off.
that show is a joke. i watched it a year ago and its not even worth watching. if you want to see more overpriced coins go to www.littletoncoin.com. it's amazing what they try to get out of coins. :rolling:
Sure, Littleton does charge a lot for their coins, but, they do advertise to the general public and have high overhead. But, to be fair, they DO pay a very fair and high price if you sell to them, and they just started (about a few months ago) buying average circ coins, like Barber dimes, quarters and half's. And their buy prices for say a Barber Half with full rims good is about $1 more than anyone else.
Littleton has been around a lot longer then a few months. I have bought random stuff from them in the past, like when they offer you a ASE for 7 bucks if you buy 7 or more before there released to the pblic..but thats really all i have ever bought from them, there very over priced. I actaully remeber for a while i was gettign coins in the mail from them as some sorta of monthly coin collecting club gimmic. Sent them back the day they would get here. They did it for about a year and for a year i was calling them asking them to stop. lol. I feel that once you buy one thing from them they assume your a sucker, and push it on you like a drug dealer. But i know there jst fishing for sales. If ou dont send it back within something like 14 days you own it. and some ofthe stuff they sent they wanted big bucks for. Say like a BU Morgan 100 dollars. Or I remember one time a 1 oz gold maple. I was blown away by that one. I almost kept it too. Untill I thought about it a little more. the spot price then was something like 400 a oz of gold. they wanted 700 for the coin. lol that was about 3 or 4 years ago. If coin collecting was ileagel they would be stadning on a corner saying to people walking by. I got what you NEED.. Best around. lol Either way it would be over priced junk
Being a resident of California, I simply send a notice to companies like Littleton that send merchandise "on approval" that I do not wish to receive such items, and if they send any more they will be treated as unconditional gifts under California Civil Code §1584.5. I always send it by certified mail so I can prove I didn't request the stuff, and I quote this part: That has always done the trick for me!
i tried the coins on approval too. you have to pay postage sending them back!:headbang: FREE! NO WAY!
Roy, Is there a civil code like the one in California for each state, and if there is who would you contact in the state you live in to get this information ? You make a very good point because there are alot of people who get caught up in these approval deals who just do not know how to get out of them or who just do not have the money to continue but are afraid if they don't pay it will hurt credit report.
The nature of the federal system of government means that each state has its own laws governing everything that has not been ceded to the national government. My knowledge of state laws other than California is limited to the laws of the 15 states the company I retired from that regulated our business, as those laws existed in December, 1995. To check on the type of law I described, asking the consumer activist reporters of your local newspapers/radio or TV stations would be a good starting point.
That show's so funny. Back to "FCS", I love how they'll tell you a 1943 P-D-S steel cent set has book value (whose book, exactly?) of like, $299, then "on this TV-only offer", jack it down to $149-- and only two left!
