I am sure this square pattern on Jefferson's coat is PMD, but I gotta make sure before sending it back to circulation.
It's the famous "knit sweater Jefferson". The story goes that Jeffersons momma made him a sweater for Christmas, but Jefferson didn't like the sweater because he is a man after all. One day Jeffersons momma was coming over to play Parcheesi and he thought that he would be a good boy and wear the sweater, he just forgot that the sculptor was coming over that day to make the pattern for the dies that year. Jefferson had to wait for his momma to leave before he said anything about it, so a few of these Knit sweater Jeffersons made their way out of the mint. Really, it looks like some sort of roller damage, but I am no error expert.
I agree that it is probably PMD because it only affects the coat. If it involved more than just that area it could have possibly been a strike through. That's just my opinion and I am in no way an expert of any kind.
Kirk, who are you trying to kid? Everybody knows that he wore BanLon's because he had an endorsement deal with them. It looks like PMD to me, too! Chris
Definitely not a doubled die. There is some MD or ejection doubling on the coin, but no hub doubling. My concern was the pattern.
