I'm fairly new to coin collecting. I have a complete set of UNC and Proof modern commemoratives as well as the proof/burnished silver eagles dollars (less the 95W proof). The vast majority are in the original mint boxes and plastic coin holders. I have seen a lot of my eBay buyers have the coin out of the plastic container to support the photos for the auction. I would like to know the positives and negatives on removing the coins from the mint's round plastic coin holders and placing the coins into a Dansco album. The album would permit me easier access to enjoy the beauty of the coin but I don't want to negatively impact the coin. Any constructive comments would be appreciated. Thank you in advance. Ed
Leave them in the orginal boxes and plastic air tights......why because one day you may wish to sell them or pass them on they will increase in value in the orginal pkgs. However they are your coins to as you wish...
Hi Ed, and welcome to the forum. My humble opinion is to leave the coins in their original government packaging as there are many in the future who will be seeking these examples. 'Free' them from the plastic, and placing them in albums is nice indeed (and collector worthy) but OGP will retain value in the long run........
Welcome to the neighborhood, Ed! Yes, it is okay to put them in a Dansco if that is your desire, but you have to be extremely careful in removing them from the Mint discs and in placing them into the Dansco. Not only should you wear cotton gloves, but you must also be careful that the plastic slide, which has sharp edges, does not scratch any of the coins. It would also be a good idea to save all of the Mint packaging, but another obstacle that you might encounter is that the coins can tone in the Dansco album since silver is highly reactive, and it would sure look odd if you put them back into the original packaging with any kind of toning on them, perhaps to sell them one day. In my opinion, you should leave them in the OGP. Chris
Welcome to CT Ed. I agree with Chris (like usual), but I would add that you can put the coins in a Dansco if you want, just insert them from the backside of the page and push them all the way down. The fields of ASEs are fairly well exposed and you don't want the edges of the plastic slides to contact any coins, much less proofs. I prefer to album collect, so most of my collections are in Dansco albums. But saving the OGP is a good idea.
