After coming with me to many many coin shops, my wife decided she wanted to buy a bill and start collecting them. Here it is. How did she do?
Nice note. Hopefully your wife received a discount off of the sticker price. The asking price is a little high and the note looks more like a XF+ than it does an AU+.......all in all not bad. As long as she likes it, that's all that matters on entry level notes.
Picked up 2oz of silver and this note for $80. So a small discount off the $22. Can a note be considered AU with a crease in it? I don't know anything about bills, so I didn't know if the grade was accurate. It wasn't too expensive so even if we overpaid by a little, she was happy. I know the golden rule: Happy Wife, Happy Life. :thumb:
I love collecting $5 bills. I've been trying to get each of the different color seals and varieties. I think your wife did great for a first timer
Yes, but I suspect your wife's 1953A $5 has more than one crease. Use a small LED flashlite and shine it on the note from the edge at an angle. Like these photos. It should detect any additional folds/creases along with any embossing.
Not a bad acquistion. Book value for XF is $18.00. I can see three vertical folds and corner fold, which will not make AU. A single center fold can be AU, albeit probably not 58 grade by PCGS/PMG standards. In any case, it's a great way into the hobby. Just watch your bank account when she finds out about large size notes. You might want to block eBay. :-D
Here are some that I use. I also use ha.com to view past auctions, as well as the Track & Price census program. I recommend the Standard catalog of United States Paper Money in the image above. However the values are higher than the market today. I would say the prices are about 20% too high. But that is normal with most books.
Nice that she got into collecting. The best thing to do is to do the research together so you both know what to look for. Be scared, be very scared.
You lucky dog. Now you can buy her coins for Christmas and wait for her to loose interest. Does she have a sister?
I have the same bill, does being cut so low make it an error or increase the value at all? I'm new... Thanks everyone!
