What do you do when you finally buy a coin you have been chasing?

Did you ever try gluing (or anything else) with that one or did you just stick it away in a huff? :)

Yeah. What did happen to that coin?

Whatever did happen, replacing it could be a temporary new focus.

    Pilkenton almost uncirculated

It took me a long time to complete my uncirculated Franklin half set, including all the proofs. When I was done I thought, "That's it?" The Dansco set stayed untouched in my book case for six months, then I sold it.

I have the same problem with all my collections. I think I enjoy the chase better than the actual product.

I believe that can be so true about many things we seek in life, including, but not limited to, our collections.

There is a basic difference between the way some of use think of our coins and others. For the most part, I stopped collecting US coins in about 1963. When they took away the silver, I stopped even saving a coin each year. I have never considered selling the coins I had so 90% of them have been with me for 50+ years. Some get looked at every few years but I am sure some have been forgotten. I don't consider coins commodities for buying and selling and have no idea how much a quarter I pulled for circulation might be worth today. I realize that the silver makes them sell above 25 cents but that is not what makes me like them. I remember being a happy kid when I found a nice coin and I'd still rather have the thing than the 25 cents or $25 or whatever it represents today. How about you? Do you love your coins for what they are or for what they are worth?

I love my coins for what they are; however, I'm always figuring the current and possible future value when buying a coin or even when I consider trading one of my precious.

I do not have many coins, but I can guarantee I would never sell any of the ones I do have. I could see a circumstance where once I knew what I was doing I would buy a coin and sell it for a profit but since I am not going that route of collecting it will probably never happen. So all my coins will be mine :)

I could see trading an awesome old coin for another awesome old coin especially if it was someone I knew. But to sell one of mine for $10 or whatever? Don't think so.

Definitley for what they are, otherwise I wouldnt be collecting ancients & I would be like most of the coin heard & collecting slabbed AU this or MS that. Ancients can have alot of faults and thats partly why I like them, they each have character in one form or another.

If I sell a coin and I make a small profit, great!, if not then life goes on.

When I do sell I always try to break even.

I superglued it. However, a tiny piece is missing, as it shattered when it cracked. So, its glued together pretty well, but has a small piece missing between the two glued pieces. My biggest problem is I cannot look at the coin without getting mad about it again. It would probably be best if I traded it cheaply to someone, but as it is it sits in a dark box.

Fortunately, I did find another a few weeks later. Not as nice a representation of the cross, but its another of the type.

It depends. For my junk silver I only ever bought it as a financial hedge, so to me its physical bullion.

Every other coin I own I am like you. I will never sell, rarely trade, the only reason I have an idea in my head about value is to be able to buy more of them. I know what an average price for a Ardashir Tet is, and what is a good price, simply because I would like to buy more if I ever came across more at a good price.

I do admit I should get more open to trading though. I received yesterday a lot of 14 gF/VF Alexandrian Trajan dichalkoi. I bought the lot for one coin, but now have like 8 Trajan dichalkoi with a hemhem crown. Its a cool coin, (especially if you read about the hemhem crown), but I realize I don't NEED, or really DESIRE, 8 of them. Its not something I collect, so 4 should be enough, right? My problem is photography. If I could photograph them, I would probably be in a better position to trade them.

Its just so darn hard giving up any "precious" I have my fingers on already, you know? I am still just utterly amazed at times that I am even ABLE to own ancient coins, they are so cool. :) I just want them ALL.

The obvious answer is for you to move to Virginia so I can spend the rest of my life photographing your coins and trying to talk you out of one or two along the way. I can't join you in the great frozen north; its too coooold! ;)

That's what I think about Virginia any more.

Attractive proposition, considering this winter. Tonight it will be 1. Yeah, not missing a digit or two, 1 stinking degree. We just got 4 more inches yesterday. Whoever said spring is about here is full of crud. :(

I did talk my ancient coin club to have a ancient coin photography program in June. Maybe that will help. We have a number of dealers in a club, and a couple usually are there every month.

Seriously? => this morning it was -25 C .... but it warmed-up to -5 C in the afternoon, because it's getting warm out!!

I took my garbage cans to the street in a T-shirt (no word of a lie) ... I guess it is all relevant? (you get climatized?)

Climatized to -5? IDK about that. Cumulative brain damage possibly. :D

Edit: Oh I forgot about you guys using that "crazy" Celsius system. Seems like our temperature is pretty similar to yours.......COLD

Yep. No one ever accused us of not being pigheaded.

Its sad really, since Jefferson wanted the US to be the FIRST nation on earth on the metric system, now we are the last. I have to do the math in my head all of the time for my Thai wife. Good thing I am good at it.
