I found this at a local coin shop today and the only thing it said on the 2x2 was "Iran,AH 773",that's all I know. Does anyone recognize it or read Arabic writing?I can't seem to ID it.Thanks!
AH 773 would be approximately 1371 on the western calendar, and I'm not aware of any readily available references for 14th Century Persian coins. Stylistically your coin resembles the hammered coinage prevalent through the 18th Century, so perhaps the date on the 2x2 is off.
Hello... I could only read some words from the picture in the right… and by the way, you post the picture upside-down Check out the picture that I put some marks on it… •The red arrow tells you the right position to how you look at it.. •The red square has the famous Islamic phrase: “There’s no god but Allah and Mohammed is the Messenger of Allah.” (لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله) •The yellow word, I think it’s the name of the Muslim Caliphate “Omar” . (عـمـر) •From the yellow word I can say that the green word is a name of another Muslim Caliphate, “Abu-Baker”. (أبو بكـر) because Muslims used to stamp the names of the great four Islamic leaders (Abu-Baker, Omar, Othman and Ali) on Islamic arts.. •The blue rectangle, I can not read the word… Are you sure that this coin is an Iranian!!? I am not sure… I feel it is not… Any way, I think it is an old piece and you need to show it to an expert in Islamic-Arabic history.. I will post it in an Arabic forum to ask about it… Who knows!!!?
Thank you so much Thamer, The guy who sold it to me said it was Iranian (Persian) from the mint at Shiraz which I think is in modern day Iran and was from the 1300's.He also thinks it is a 2 dinars coin. If you could post it on the other forum,I would appreciate it my friend.Who knows?
It is definitely a silver Dirham from the Islamic Empire of the Caliphs. As to which one,I can't remember off-hand,unless you go to this article; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caliph . Aidan.
I got a chance to speak with the guy who sold the coin to my local shop and he gave me some additional info to identify my coin. He said to check coins of the Muzaffarid dynasty (1314-1393 AD) so I went to google and then to Forum Ancient coins and voila! It comes from the time if Tamerlane (Timur-i-lang in Persian),the Alexander the Great of the 14th Century. He conquered parts of China,India and Persia and sided with or fought all of the Muzzafarid (or Mongol) shahs. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/historia/coins/j2/j541.htm Thanks to everyone for the input.
