What do you do when you finally buy a coin you have been chasing?

Its been an eventful week. I have won, but not yet received, two of my most sought coins i have been chasing. One is a sassanid Vahran "family portrait" in xf, and the other is a rare Trajan dichalkoi with a rhino. It almost feels like a letdown already. I have been chasing them so long, i almost feel bad now that i own them.

Anyone else ever feel like that, that a victory is a letdown?

I know exactly what you're saying! It's the sinking feeling of... "well, NOW what?!?"
    Congrats on your victory nonetheless!
To your question, YES. But always another battle on the horizon....

When I finally bought my last of the Twelve Caesars Denarii (Caligula), I also felt a lose. Maybe not a letdown, but perhaps more like "what do I do now" feeling.

I know exactly how you feel. Either I move on to some other coin endeavor or more likely I ended up taking a break from my coins and kind of recoup/recharge and dig back in with another coin goal.

I fear this is going to happen when I fill my 7070 album... I'm thinking I may start up a canadian type set after that :)

This is exactly the same type of feeling after the Red Sox won the first world series. As a fan, you wake up the next morning and say to yourself "now what?".

You know there are more coins out there...

    What a great feeling!
    Congratulations!

Yes, you guys are right there are more coins, but both of these i have been pursuing for like a decade. You know, every sale, ebay searches, scouring coin shows, etc. I have refused to overpay, and both are not easy to find in nice condition to begin with. Repeatedly, either no coins, or bad coins, or outbidding has conspired to keep them away from me. Now, there is just no longer the push to chase these two so hard, (though i am sure eventually i will buy more, i am a hoarder).

I just need to find a couple of other white whales to pursue i guess.

Learn as much as you can about your coins, the emperors on them, take more pictures, make collages/desktop wallpapers, make a mini-book about all of your coins for display.

    Precisely. Play with your coins!

Kind of like when you get married, your wedding night. There are more nights to come.

My Orbiana was a coin I had been chasing for a couple of years & it was a big relief to get it. I dont feel it was a letdown.

Since Orbiana there is still several coins that have replaced that one on my "hunt" list. As with the OP some have come and gone for the same reasons but it just makes the hunting sweeter.

I must admit that "the hunt" is quite a fun part of coin collecting ... but I never hunt for too long before I start getting really, really hungry!! ... so for me, "pulling the trigger" is definitely the most fun part!!

    :sniper:

=> yah, when I go out coin-hunting I usually don't have a specific target in mind (or a holy grail coin) ... when I'm hungry, I basically search-out the best available prey and then "eat it!!"

    :eat: :burger:

=> so if my silent tracking-skills and my sniper-rifle can't find a specific prey, then I tend to change my diet plans ... grenades and/or napalm can always find me something to eat which will tide me over for awhile!!

    :foot-mouth:

To some/most, I'm sure this may seem like a reckless way of operating ... but for me, it is very satisfying, plus depending upon my mood at the time, I probably tend to branch-off in more random directions than most collectors and make far more "impulse" purchases (most of which end-up opening new doors into the vast coin collecting labyrinth!!)

    :thirst:

    ... I'm just sayin'

Medoraman is one of our best when it comes to CT posts and knowledge. I'm sure he will move on to another worthy personal challenge. This is good advise for some of the newbe's, however.

Or, you could study on how to take good pictures of your coveted coins. I remember you're always saying you are not that good at photographing coins.

I suck at it, I just do. I don't know why I am such a failure at it.

I understand AncientJoe's posts. If I were better with picture taking I could do that, but I am not. I already know about everything to know about the ruler, the coin, the types, I have all of the references, etc. It was just a weird feeling to NOT have to look for these coins anymore, when I have been doing it for so dang long now. It was just an integral part of coin collecting for me, chasing down these two badly wanted coins for so long.

Eh, I still have my Christopher Byzantine I need. Maybe I will just read through the Sassanid books and see if there is another "must have" emperor I can set my sites on.

Btw, here is what the Vahran coin looks, like, (but this is not mine).

Can you see why I have been chasing one so long? :)

Everyone is bad at taking pictures at the beginning. After a few thousand clicks, you get better and in the process, you get to know every square millimeter of your coins very well.
