Ok, so in my searches the most sought after Jefferson is the 1950-D due to hoarding, so you can expect my disbelief when out of a fresh bank roll of nickels did I see one, as well as a 55-D which i heard was somewhat hard to find, true or not it doesnt matter, its the first iv found of either year. From the pics you can see minor nicks and scratches. Im not sure how strong of strike these would have had in those days but the wearing is only slight from what i can see. The 50-D reverse shows most of the steps, I am unable to tell if the bottom step was due to a weak strike of it was worn down, while the 55-D has only parts of the steps, barely none compared to the other. What kind of grade would these garner, I mean the fast that I found a 50-D is awesome regardless, but im just curious of a possible grade. Thanks, and hope these are ok pics
Great find on the 50-D for sure! They are tough to find in rolls, especially in nice condition. It doesn't have full steps due to when it was struck. For this year though, full steps don't add much (if any) premium for most of the MS grades. I can't comment on the grade of your find due to the images. Really need to see luster and better detail overall.
I use a Canon A630 with Macro Setting with a detachable zoom lens so i can get in close (home made), how would you recommend I get a better image for the aspects you ask for, Id use my scanner but it produces pixilated images for scanned coins.
It's not the zoom level that is the issue. It's the white balance, contrast and lighting. Those things I mentioned are washing out all the luster (if any) and surface details. It hides all any rubs, hits, scratches, and luster breaks. To differentiate between AU-high grades, these things are needed to be seen in the image. Here is an example. If you want any suggestions from me, send a PM. -greg
Yes in deed a very hand coin to find in a roll the 1950 D ..As a YN I had completed my collection except for the 50 D in 1960's money the coins cost was around the $30 some mark. As a 8 to 10 year old that was way to much money to pay for a coin ...thinking $30 in the 60's as being equal to 4 times that today money. It took my years to obtain my 50 D for my Jefferson collection. Today I have about 25 to 35 of them as I purchased a unc. roll several years ago. Today I have two complete Jefferson collections with varieties.as well as proofs strikes. I highly recomend these two Jeffs to find and hold onto...they are the 1994 matte and 1997 matte finish coins these two will be key coins to a complete Jefferson collection. both are low mintages the 1997 only 25000!
gbroke, i still dont know how I would fix the issues im having with luster and such, do you have a recommendations? Would you use an image editing program or mess around with my cameras settings? Thanks Paddy54 for the info and ill keep an eye out for those nickels you mentioned!
