I know there are many coin collectors you have never even heard of General Douglas MacArthur, Marshall, Arnold or any of the others who will be commemorated with the new upcoming coins that are going to be sold starting next week. Are you gonna be a buyer? Are you gonna buy to re-sell or you you gonna pass? I plan on buying at least a silver proof but I really want a gold piece with MacArthur, just don't know if I can swing it financially yet Anyone?

I will be buying the silver dollar and half dollar in both proof and uncirculated in order to keep my post-1981 modern commemorative collection of all proof and uncirculated coins 100% complete.

I'll swing a gold MacArthur (later this year perhaps) but it ain't gonna be easy. Dang it's tough to collect the gold issues because they's so danged expensive.

Hap Arnold......now there was a man.

Interesting choice of designs. The only 5-star ever fired from a command position gets a coin all to himself, and the others, including a two-term US President, have to share their honors..

My grandmother has been there and done that, so I don't have to.

She bought these decorative plates shortly after World War II.

Five-star admirals and generals, and Pres. Roosevelt to make eight.

From top left to bottom right:
    Admiral King
    Admiral Leahy
    Admiral Nimitz
    General Arnold
    General Eisenhower
    General MacArthur
    General Marshall
    President Roosevelt

    :)

I'll be buying everything but the gold. With the price of gold, that same money will buy several coins I would rather have.

What's the meaning of the oil lamp on the reverse? I noticed that several of the ANA medals use the same design.

That's the Levenworth Lamp which is the symbol of the Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC).

No, but I'll gladly buy one of Nathanael Greene.
It'd okay that he wasn't a five star since that's just
a senior four star with a crown and a Hollywood
    camera crew.

Come Thursday I'll be ordering something, just need to decide. It just depends on how much the mint will be selling their $5 gold proof for, sometimes their markup is insane. There should be a law on how much the mint can charge, that's what I'm talking about. :thumb:

The lamp is also an old symbol, the lamp of knowledge, it's light banishing the gloom of ignorance. You will often find it being used by schools, museums and other educational organizations.

if the unc mac has low numbers and I have the $ (big if) I may pull the trigger...also the clad half may end with low numbers

50 hours until these go on sale and still no price for the gold.

It's too bad we can't make George S. Patton a 5-star general posthumously and give him a coin also. I think that would sell.

definitely the most widely respected military leader (and rightly so)

I think it's good the Mint is producing these. Five star generals are essentially politicians, but they weren't always politicians. They started off as lieutenants and ensigns. So it's certainly better than just honoring people who have only served our country (or themselves) as politicians, like most dead presidents.

Another idea: Mint a coin for at least every division/fleet/wing size element in our military. All we have now are the challenge coins that are usually made of brass and minted who knows where and some of them are very low quality. I would buy silver and maybe even gold coins for the 3rd Armored Division, the 101st Airborne Division, and the 2nd Infantry Division.

I think that would be a great idea, but I wonder if it would ever fly as there are certainly powerful elements in our government that are anti-military and would view those kind of commeratives as pro-military....

That's certainly possible, so we should promote them as pro-veteran. :thumb:
