I have been away from CT for the last month or so because of extended federal jury duty and having been constantly on the road for work (I know, you guys all missed me). But I can never stop my persuit of classic proof coins. One day, while on a lunch break from jury duty, I decided to go into my favorite coin shop in the world. This shop has been in business and has been run by the same family since 1898. To say that they know their coins is an understatement to say the least. They are well aware of my weakness for early proof coins and have no problem tempting me with coins that my budget will never allow. But on this day, as soon as I stepped foot in the door, the owner grinned from ear to ear knowing that he had a coin that I have been seeking for over a decade. He called me behind the counter to hand it to me and I knew without even looking at the coin that I had to have it. Sure enough, I just couldn't live without what he handed me. This little beauty now sits very proudly in my collection. It may not be the most expensive coin in my collection, but after a decade long search, it is my new favorite. Now all I need to do is find a matching proof large cent to keep it company. Here's to my next decade long search.
It is an NGC PR-65 BR. I will likely remove it from its tomb to put it in my proof type set album. Don't wory, I had my own album made and each coin is safely stored in an air-tite. I am going to wait until after the ANA show in New Orleans though. The coin is just a bit darker than I would like it to be and I am considering a trade with a dealer friend of mine for another. His coin is a PCGS PR-64 RB with a much nicer cameo although it is not labeled a CAM.
Very nice, and I would crack it out too if I was going to keep it If you keep it and crack it out I would love to see what it weighs. These tend to come in two weights, either 81.5 grains or 87 grains, but not on the normal 84 grain planchets.
You are correct beef, I have found most of the restrikes to be a little overweight. Of course I have only handeled about a half dozen of them.
