looks like a small extra bear claw error. tell me what you guys think. im not happy about it because i cant take good pictures, and if stats are true, and this is an error, and worth in the $100s, this will be the only one i get. and that sucks. 0.o heres pics:
The "extra" claw is just a die chip which makes it look like an extra claw. There were tens of thousands of these struck. Out of the four rolls that I got from the Mint, about half of them had the die chip. It's only worth a lot to a bidiot. Chris
Like 25 cents each or "somthen'". To add to Chris' post, I remember reading that it has been estimated that upwards of half the total mintage has the chip. How true this is I cannot say, but these are painfully common nonetheless.
Geek - The more common the die chip, the less likely it is that it will hold a premium. With this one being so common, it's only worth face value unfortunately. That doesn't mean that it isn't nice to own, I honestly don't pay much attention to the State Quarters, I have BU examples of each from each mint, but that's as far as I go with them. Having one of the "varieties" or die chips, or anything of the like would be nice to put into the collection though I'm sure for a lot of collectors. But again, so common that most collectors probably have a handful of them that they got from their pocket change.
Die chips are relatively common occurrences...the "extra claw" is a well known one. I wouldn't pay a premium for it but that doesn't mean someone else will. Ultimately, if you don't plan on selling every coin, collect based on what you like/think is cool. Keep up the hunt!
yeah, i guess that makes sense. i only call em' ugleys because when you find a super double die, you'll want to see your eye doctor, plus all those die chips and cracks in my opinion makes it look ugly and undesireble.
If you want to see loads of die chips, take a look at the UT SQ's. I searched bags of them and found sometimes as many as a half-dozen on each coin. Chris
