Hey Ya'll As some of ya'll know its not easy or lets say cheap to get some of the Washington Quarters from the 30's in higher grades--and when you do there could be a fingerprint or something on it as most of them circulated back then and IIRC from what I've read not many people kept UNC Rolls....I'm sure when looking at some coins there are a ton of these but when doing a set I think the 30's are the hardest---look what a quarter could buy in the 30's.....http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi So here are a few I got off ebay---at a steal! I'm happy with them---I'm sure I could have gotten better ones but not for what I paid for them---I think Gray Sheet for both of the coins would be over $100 and I got them both for under $50! Both coins are graded by NGC and I agree with the grades---the photos one ebay wern't the best and they were listed in the wrong place but I took the chance and am glad I did! I'll post the grades after some of ya'll guess...if ya'll want better photos of one side or both sides let me know and I'll try again---I just did these tonight really fast. Speedy
I'll take a crack at it 1934 - AU58. Looks like a touch of wear on the obverse, though it could just be the typical mushy strike. 1935 - MS62. Bummer about the fingerprint. The marks I see I believe are on the slab?
64, and 63 are my guesses. I think the first is a 64, because it has clean fields, and a relatively clean face, but have some schmutz on it which detracts from the eye appeal and luster. I think the second is a 63, as the fields are clean except for the right obverse field, and the face is relatively clean. Luster is supportive of the grade.
I'd guess 66 & 65. The second coin may be graded lower depending on just how deep/bad the mark in the right obverse field is...Mike
Ok ya'll..... The 1934 was graded MS65---the coin is pretty much clean of marks but the strike doesn't seem all that strong--so IMO its as high as it could go---Gray Sheet for this coin a few months back was in the $90's... The 1935 was graded MS62---IMHO the fingerprint is what held it back---you have to really look at the coin for a good time with a 10x to see it or either look at the coin in photos--it just really doesn't show all that much but I'm sure that is why its only graded 62. It might get cracked out and place in my book---and then look around for another slabbed one! Thanks Speedy
That's what I hate about Washingtons, they are so hard to grade for me. The 1934 I wouldn't have said any higher than 62 and the 1935 no higher than maybe a 55. Gah. Good thing I don't collect them.
I won this one Teletrade---I think I overpaid just a tad with shipping---but I liked it and I thought it was a nice upgrade from the one photed aboved--while the detail is alittle weakly struck I'm looking more for coins with blasting luster that just drips from the coin!!!! http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=2285&lot=1438 Speedy
The hair looks worn to me on both coins. I don't find the 1935 attractive at all, but the 1934 looks nice in spite of the hair wear (NGC obviously thought differently about the hair).
MS64 and MS62. Not seeing them in person, both could also be As low as MS62, or as high as MS 65. The 1934 has dibs on an MS65. The 1935 has dibs on an MS63. I will stick with MS64 and MS62....
