2006 D Penny, Damaged Reverse or Error?!?

    Hello All,

I've come across another "interesting" coin. This time it's a 2006 D penny and the reverse is mostly "missing" (see photo). The obverse is completely fine. After staring at it for a while and trying to convince myself that it is damage, I thought I would see what the experts say. The fact that the rim of the reverse is completely in tact and undamaged makes me think damage is not the answer. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I don't think it's damaged. Don't quote me on this one, I don't have enough experience with capped dies but I think this might be one.

Can you post a picture of the Obv.? I think more so Post Mint but the E P U has me thinking as it looks like that area is not damaged .

Will do as soon as I can. You are correct that the E P U looks completely normal. Also, the diagonal "pattern" of streaks seems to be very consistent across the entire reverse EXCEPT for the rim (the rim is still fully raised and flawless). These patterns running all the way up to the rim with no damage to the rim seems hard to do by everyday damage. Could grease (in a very extreme case) be the culprit? I'll post a picture of the Obv. ASAP and if anyone else has suggestions about other angles, etc. I could post pictures of, please let me know.

    Thanks,
    John

Whatever it is, I had a Salvador Dali moment just looking at it! Very cool coin!

Im no expert and what im about to say is only from personal experience and should not be taken as the gospel. I would suggest a severely grease filled die because as I look at slabbed examples of struck through capped die errors on google images it seems there is always some sort of image transferred in the strike. I dont think you could sand down the design elements so close to the rim without damaging it, either way cool coin and i hope it is a legitimate error, im sure someone far more knowledgeable than me will confirm.

I am thinking severe grease-filled die as well.
    Keep up the hunt!

Sorry for taking this off-topic. Really cool coin, Club!

First of all, welcome to Cointalk! I would suggest that you post a new thread rather than posting on a 5 year old one. That way, you will most likely get more response to help you. Based on the pictures, it looks like your coin is damaged, and worth one cent.

Its not damaged it hollow in that spot with no cooper coat over it there is other small pin holes the same. Its in the workmanship of the penny.
