Hey guys, my dad is interested in purchasing an investment grade $20 Gaudens from a reputable dealer that can select a special coin. Can you recommend who you think the best dealer is to deal with on something like this? Dealer should be reputable and able to choose and cherrypick a particularly nice coin as well as give advice on the right date/mint to go for. Thanks
I would say to go to a coin show and look around, meet some dealers and get prices. There is nothing like seeing the coin in hand yourself.
I would go to Heritage auctions. they have a large selection and very detailed pictures. also you can check past results. common date MS64s right now have a good upside for better examples. they're not much more than 62s or 63s. he should get a feel for good examples himself. at times over the years the spread to bullion for Saints has gained a good bit. at worst they track bullion up with little downside or premiium compression. .... maybe look into ms65s
I guess I need to clarify. He wants to buy the coin from a reputable dealer. He wants the dealer to choose a nice specimen for the grade and to also recommend a date/mintage that is more of interest to collectors than your average common dates. Obviously, someone with good knowledge of the Gaudens series can do that better than I can. But it would need to be a reputable dealer with high integrity that is good at choosing coins for clients. So I wanted to get your recommendations as to the best dealers for such a thing. Thanks
That was information that would have best been added in the first post. As it was, there could have been a point made for buying generic, low range MS double eagles that are much more tightly tied to bullion fluctuations instead of buying a nicer coin that might have future increased collector demand.
My dad isn't trying to invest here, he just wants a nice coin that is a good example of the series. When I think of "investment-grade," I think of a particularly nice coin, not necessarily a coin bought as an investment. Obviously he wants something a little more of interest than a common date, so he'll take the dealer's advice on a good date/mint and then he'd like the dealer to cherrypick a particularly nice coin for the grade with great eye-appeal, etc. I have no interest in shopping around for him since I don't go to shows and I'm not going to evaluate a coin based on internet pictures. I'm not an expert in the series either. Soo . . . the question still stands: Who would you recommend for this sort of thing?

Their own. Tom B has been posting in this thread for you, all you have to do is click on the link in his signature line to find all that out. LostDutchman is not only a member of the forum, he is also one of our Moderators on the forum. But he also just happens to be a coin dealer, and one that you can trust. He makes posts all the time. Just look for his name, and click on his links.
I think I explained it, but I didn't mean for investment purposes as some took it, I meant a nicer than average specimen for the series. The term "investment-grade" is sometimes used to refer to grades of MS-65 and above in series where gem coins are readily available. For other series, "investment-grade" coins could be of grades lower than gem grade. But in any case, I used the term in reference to MS-65 or better $20 St. Gaudens, not that he's trying to invest by buying one coin. Now everyone can take a deep breath . . .
That certainly clarifies what you meant, and I know you said it twice Just keep in mind, almost every week someone comes here with a low post count and creates a thread asking which coins would make a good 'investment'.
