Okay, how about this--you may only post ONE coin per poster. Pick your favorite for posting and please explain why it is special to you.

    I will go first:

These are all pictures of the same coin, obviously. Why is it special to me? It isn't the rarest, most expensive, or most precious coin I own, but there was and is something about the champagne color that made me buy it immediately.

I would think this is my favorite for several reasons. One is it took me forever to justify paying a lot of money for a Jefferson nickel and the other is that my wife might have thought I was crazy to buy it but never gave me a bit of trouble when I asked if she minded that I buy it.
I paid for it in installments from an eBay seller and paid it off a lot earlier than was agreed on.

As a Jefferson collector you made a smart move buying this coin! Being only 1655 known you sir are 1/1655 whom can say they do have a complete set of Proof Jefferson's. I have have 2 one graded and one in the Proof set. I also recommend the 1994 P & 1997 P Matte finishes mintages 167,703 & 25000 that said two more huge keys to the set.

027.jpg 028.jpg This old gal has been in my collection since I was 7 years old! It was given to me by my father. Who paid for it our of his pocket when he was a young banker in Baltimore. Since I was born in South Baltimore not far from Fort Mchenry {Home of our National Anthem} and with the war of 1812 being fought there...it has always been my favorite. Yes as a YN I did clean it...My bad I know...in the early 60's cleaning a coin was not a mortal sin.
Every time I hold it.... my mind wonders if it was there in Baltimore durring the Battle. Maybe in a pocket of one of the defenders of the fort....or one of the other forts that surround Baltimore harbor. Was it at the battle of Nort Point where the defenders cut off the British from out flanking the city to its east. Was it in the pocket of the sniper who took out the British commanding officer that forced the British to retreat? Who knows.... I do know it's not for sale nor ever will be...just passed on .....

This was a tough choice but in the end I decided on this one. While I have a few "70s" This is my only non-70 toppop. Also it is one of my few coin show buys. I saw it, fell in love with the coin, add in I love the "Signature Label" series and... Heck back to the coin, it says it all....I just couldn't walk past when it was only $10 :D 077.jpg 078.jpg 080.jpg 083.jpg

Bought this coin from FirstCoinvestors when I was in graduate school. I couldn't really afford it at $300, but when I saw it I had to have it. Like many others, I think about the history behind it.

That 1969 cent is a fantastic find. Wow! If I may, how much would it be worth?

  11. Because it's 10X rare than the dollar key date counterpart.

    S$1 1923 Rev closeup.jpg S$1 1923 Obv closeup.jpg

Reason: My first big purchase (~$160), my most beautiful coin, and a "Type" I always wanted as a kid. This coin also got me to think more about quality and less about quantity. Also my first CAC coin, although by coincidence.

I love it because of the lion and because the 10 centimes denomination is scarce in higher grades. the funny thing is that this is not my most valuable coin either just my favorite older coin amongst all my other modern coins.

OK - I know I have posted pictures of this one before, but I think it is my favourite overall. If there was a fire and I had time to get just one coin before the house burnt down, I think it would be this one. All George I coins are fairly scarce, and decent grade Crowns even more so. (Scale never comes across in these photos - it is roughly the same size and weight as a Morgan Dollar.)
I bought this at an auction - probably paid over the odds for it, but I couldn't keep my hand down!

OK, I'm gonna break the rules because I can't post just one ;) Dang things are like potato chips :D

This first one was minted in 1364 by the Count Louis de Male in the Netherlands. The coin is special for several reasons. For one the coin was the first French franc ever minted known as the franc a cheval, for another the coin was specifically designed and minted to be used to pay the ransom for the French King Jean le Bon who was captured in battle by the Black Prince of the English army in the 100 Years War. And the coin is also the finest example known.

    1364 Cavalier D'Or rev.jpg

Now this second coin is special because I cherry-picked it out of a world wide auction offering. At the time there were only 2 or 3 examples of this coin known to exist, and nobody else even noticed this coin because it was listed as a common example. I say at the time because in the years following my buying of the coin, between me and another forum friend, we have able to identify a total of 7 individual examples of this coin. And that re-writes the books. You can read more about this coin here - http://www.cointalk.com/t76543/

    Hello Derick,

I trust that you are having fun in Canada. :)

When I found the 1969-S cud, my local dealer offered me $8 (for a coin that cost me $0.01). I never sold it & have found more of them over the years. The one depicted is actually the last one that I purchased. It is now in an NGC AU58 holder. The LC-69S-04 sells today for anywhere between $60 and $200 (Possibly $300 for a bright red example).
