Be sure to catch it on the 11th.It shows the complete process of coin making including first ever footage shot inside the West Point mint of the creation of gold and platinum coins from bullion bar to box with closeups of the actual stamping out of proofs.
Also, goes to the auction where the 1913 V nickel is auctioned and discusses and shows in detail the detection method for fake coins like Morgan dollars.

That wouldn't be permitted under copyright law. It would also be a very large upload. Even with compression, an hour of video will be at least 1.5 to 2 gigabytes of data. If you post your e-mail address I'll contact you with some possible solutions.

The bits about copyright law are certainly correct, but the bit about compression isn't necessarily. I mean, if all you do is zip the raw video, yeah, it's going to be huge. If you were to use a codec like xvid or the like you could get an hour (actually about 44 minutes after commercials) down to about 350 megs.

    Not that that's really relevant.

I was using an estimate for a TiVo file converted to mpg which is a fairly universal format. I'm not familiar with xvid. Would that provide full-screen quality?

Yes, Xvid is the bane of the movie industry. It is one of the most common formats that file sharers distribute ripped DVDs in. Even with such compression, Xvid files can be played through a projector or on a widescreen HDTV and still be very detailed.

So, who can I send a blank DVD-R to? I wanna see this. (Yes, I don't have cable. And I wouldn't have a TV, but someone gave me one.)

I too don't have cable so I'll miss this one. Most of my nieghbors have cable or satilites but gettingthem to make a copy of that program would not be the easiest thing. I'll just wait til it's on PBS.

The gold double eagles were counterfeited by a guy they call Omega man because of what looks like the greek letter Omega on a raised lump near the eagle's tail..they still sell for over $500 to collectors.

And if it wasn't for that mark - they wouldn't be able to tell they were counterfeit. That's how good some counterfeits can be.

Those were 1907 high reliefs (That was what Omega counterfeited in the double eagles). For the time when they were discovered they were state of the art, but the anti counterfeiting experts say that by todays standards, if they just came out they would be spotted quickly and easily. (Mr Omega also made counterfeit 1882 three dollars gold pieces. His Omega signature is inside the loop of the R in LIBERTY.)

The Omegas were discovered back in the early days of ANACS when it was the onlyreal organized authentication services which the needed concentration of talent and data. Before that time each expert worked independantly and only had his own experience to fall back on and no large archives of die diagnostics for both real and fake coins.

ANACS changed all that and made the detection of counterfeits easier and more certain. While lots of people like to thank PCGS and NGC for their efforts removing counterfeits from the market, the real heros in that fight was ANACS that had spent 14 years eliminating and identifying the different counterfeits by die diagnostics, and training the experts that then went on to continue the work at PCGS and NGC. (Most of the top graders/authenticators at the other tops services were originally from ANACS)
