The Kainon bronzes have traditionally been attributed to the mint of Alaisa, but they should probably be best regarded as mercenary issues from an unknown mint.

... okay fine, I admit that this may not be from Syracuse, but it's still from Sicily and I felt that it belonged with it's bros!!

I love the whimsical, marine-life designs on many of the Syracuse coins. I don't own any yet, but the day will come...

I thought that this was a very cool/interesting coin from Syracuse ...

NOTE => this coin is more than 1,000 years younger than the first coin in this thread!!

HERACLIUS AE 40 nummi follis. Struck at Syracuse, Sicily. Overstruck on a large follis of Anastasius from Constantinople

    circa 622 AD or earlier
    Diameter: 33.5mm
    Weight: 13.6g
Obverse: Facing bust of Heraclius, monogram-cross beside, all within 9mm countermarked circle, bust of Anastasius clearly identifiable underneath
Reverse: Large M from original undertype, mintmark CON overstamped with SCLS mintmark.

syracuse heraclius countermark 2a.jpg syracuse heraclius countermark 2b.jpg

NOTE => I asked dougsmit what he thought of the coin and he stated:

=> and so I felt that was enough of an endorsement from our favourite coin-guru, right?! (thanks Doug)

Note: I'm fairly sure that the "host coin" was similar to the following:

HOST COIN - ANASTASIUS I AE 40 nummi follis. Constantinople mint, circa 512-517 AD. D N ANASTASIVS P P AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right. Reverse - Large M, star to left, cross above, star to right, A below. Mintmark CON

    syracuse heraclius before.jpg

Heraclius overstruck 40 nummi folles on earlier coinage, dating from the time of Anastasius to Justin II, at Syracusae, Sicilia, as part of a renewed focus on the island's importance as a strategic base.
