Very fine The Kainon bronzes have traditionally been attributed to the mint of Alaisa, but they should probably be best regarded as mercenary issues from an unknown mint. ... okay fine, I admit that this may not be from Syracuse, but it's still from Sicily and I felt that it belonged with it's bros!!

I thought that this was a very cool/interesting coin from Syracuse ... NOTE => this coin is more than 1,000 years younger than the first coin in this thread!! HERACLIUS AE 40 nummi follis. Struck at Syracuse, Sicily. Overstruck on a large follis of Anastasius from Constantinople circa 622 AD or earlier Diameter: 33.5mm Weight: 13.6g Obverse: Facing bust of Heraclius, monogram-cross beside, all within 9mm countermarked circle, bust of Anastasius clearly identifiable underneath Reverse: Large M from original undertype, mintmark CON overstamped with SCLS mintmark. NOTE => I asked dougsmit what he thought of the coin and he stated: => and so I felt that was enough of an endorsement from our favourite coin-guru, right?! (thanks Doug) Note: I'm fairly sure that the "host coin" was similar to the following: HOST COIN - ANASTASIUS I AE 40 nummi follis. Constantinople mint, circa 512-517 AD. D N ANASTASIVS P P AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right. Reverse - Large M, star to left, cross above, star to right, A below.
