I'm starting to collect canadian dollars, mainly because I like them and because they are affordable, a few thing confuse me

there are a few low mintage like the 1953 (206k) that are still only really worth melt value right up to ms grade.... Why?

do you think they will ever be rare and valuable?

obviously there are some rare and expensive ones but they have to work for it like the 1911 dollars, very valuable but only THREE minted??!

what are your thoughts on the future of these dollars?

Severe lack of demand versus us dollars. Its a trap to associate us demand to foreign coin figures.

Of course eventually it will be collectible, but i don't see it for our lifetime unless canadians get a lot more interested in their coinage.

I have a small type collection started a few years ago. Type means one of each design. That is 1939, 1949, 1958 totem pole, 1967 goose. 1970, Also have the 1982 non silver. The only somewhat expensive one is the 1949.
As far as ever being worth anything it's sort of unlikely.

On average, Canadians don't seem to care about our history...

I think it has something to do with how it is forced to be taught... If I have to learn anything else about Native Americans I'll SCREAM!

All we learn about is Native Americans, Politics and the original settlers... Until Grade 10 (when most people have already decided that they dislike or hate history :()

It's starting to make more sense now! I love collecting but I also want it to be a valuable inheritance for my kids, I assumed canadian dollars would gain historical value over the next 30 years as well as precious metal value and would hence would be a great buy now for the future but maybe not :( I've heard Indian coins are an up and comer due to the country starting to collect their own coins.

Do anyone have any suggestions or is currently collecting coins with future potential? (For the modest buyer)

Most collectors will tell you to just collect what you like. I started out putting together complete sets in albums.
But that can be time consuming and costly. You may want to start a type set if you can find a Dansco 7070 album.
The goal is to find a focus somehow.
    Not everyone does this.
