    I just started coin collection could just damage have been done at the mint since it's the only mark on the entire penny

    It appears to be post-mint damage (PMD). Note how the metal appears to be pushed up along the edges (crater effect).

    Agreed, PMD. Looks like it took a nasty hit. Keep up the hunt!

    I would guess and say no. The first thing I notice is that the damage area is brighter than the rest of the cent. It would be toned the same if it happened during the striking process.
